Review

The photography is superb...the layout of the book is excellent. -- Nancy C. Olmstead, co-author of The Audubon Society

ORANGE HAWKWEED.................ORANGE Hieracium aurantiacum...........June-Sept. Aster Family....................Plate 26 Flower: heads 3/4" wide;

Plant: 1-2' high A small cluster of red-orange flower heads are at the top of the hairy stem of this plant. Each head is made up en- tirely of ray flowers, finely fringed at the tips. There are no disk flowers. Green bracts around the flower heads are covered with dark gland-tipped hairs. Coarse, blunt, lance- shaped, hairy leaves, 2-5" long, are in a basal rosette. Hawkweed is common in fields, clearings and along roadsides. It is also known as Devil's Paintbrush because farmers consider it such a troublesome weed. It was once thought that hawks ate the plant to strengthen their vision.
