Clear, direct, informed!! This is possibly the handiest and most usable wildflower reference for high country walkers of the eastern U.S. The photos are clearer and with better contrast than any other reference we have.

You do not have to hike the 1,000+ miles of the AT to appreciate this book. These flowers are all over the eastern US. The descriptions are easy to understand and the photos are absolutely magnificent.

This book had everything I was looking for - beautiful, full page, color photos of every flower. The design and layout of the book are wonderful, and the full page plant desription and notes is a great read. If you love wildflowers and learning about them, you will love this book

I bought "Wildflowers of the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains" by the same author/photographer team and fell in love with it. So I decided to buy this book as well, and I have not been disappointed. It is another truly beautiful guide to the wildflowers of the Appalachians. Much of what I said in my review for the other book (see comment for link) also applies to this one. It has artistically pleasing full page photographs and enjoyable write-ups.
In contrast to the other book, this one provides location information where to find the flowers along the Appalachian Trail, whereas the other book lists locations along the Blue Ridge Parkway and trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This book is a little slimmer by comparison due to fewer pages and the use of thinner paper. It covers 94 species with pictures in detail with descriptions of an additional 60 related species, whereas the other book covers 120 species in photographs and an additional 100 in descriptions. There is some overlap of course, but I am delighted to find that photographs and descriptions of plants covered in both books are different, giving even more information on those species than you could gather from just one of the books. Some plants are only covered in one, but not the other, so the books complement each other nicely. For example, one covers Pink Lady's Slipper and mentions the yellow one, while the other covers Yellow Lady's Slipper and mentions the pink one. Overall, this is another beautiful and useful book to have for hikers and wildflower photographers.

Great reference book! Each flower has a full page summary and a full page picture to go with it. The book has excellent information and amazing pictures that compliment it completely. I especially love that it contains information on the blooming season. I can't wait to take this book out in the spring and find the flowers mentioned. I have already found discovered the names of plants that I saw this past summer and was finally able to find out what they were!
I definitely recommend this book for anyone that lives near the Appalachian Trail (or is planning a visit) and enjoys hiking and learning more about nature. Book provided by Keen Communication in exchange for my honest review. |
