Getting to and observing flowers in Denali National Park can be challenging. Because of the short growing season and the cold temperatures, many of the plants and flowers have made adaptations that make them miniatures of similar plant species that would be found in the lower 48 states. Verna Pratt and her husband Frank spent countless hours hiking and gathering photographs of these often fleeting flowers to produce 2 field guides for plants and flowers you are likely to see as you travel through Denali Park and Alaska. The books are organized by flower color to assist in plant ID. These books are INVALUABLE if you are attempting to ID plants in Alaska! I have assisted dozens of hikers in IDing plants using these books. The guides are small enough to carry in your daypack, are printed on good quality paper so are sturdy and hold up well for years of use. It may be that other regions of the US have longer growing seasons and thus a greater number of books available for plant ID, but if you are looking for guides that will serve most purposes in Alaska, these guides have proven themselves and are used consistantly by naturalist across the state throughout the summer.
