A werewolf fan's delight,

I enjoyed the book a lot. Nice solid depiction of a police detective working a case, with very well developed werewolf culture included. Recommend this for people who enjoy a strong, smart female lead, and werewolf fans. Not as erotic or sensual as Anita Blake books, but solid plotting and a real feel of suspense and danger in the book. On the plus side there are two leads, the main lead is the female police detective who is secretly a werewolf, and her new partner, a very human male who's also a very good detective. Maybe too good as he gets close to his partner's dangerous secret. This is NOT a romance. It's mainly a mystery with some good werewolf culture woven in. A good read.

Lots of action and werewolves,

Allison Goodnight is a detective in a coastal Texas town, she is also a werewolf, as are many members of the department. She is breaking in a new partner (human) when a werewolf serial killer strikes the town. It is imperative that humans are not made aware of the existence of werewolves, and that they capture this rogue before she kills again. This was an entertaining and action packed novel. I found myself reading far longer than I wanted to find out who the killer was and why. The characters were a little flat and did not really hold my interest, fortunately, the murder mystery was engrossing.

another excellent Police story with a twist,
By K. Maxwell "katmax1" (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wilding Nights (Paperback)
I've come to expect well crafted police stories with a twist from this author, and this story is no exception. It has to be said straight out that this is a "werewolf" novel, but maybe not exactly the "normal" sort of werewolves you might expect. When a series of horrible murders start happening top dectetive Allison Goodnight is assigned to the case with her new rookie partner Zane kerr. Zane soon sposts problems with the way Allison is reporting information on the case, and not being stupid himself starts to put some odd facts together about her...which could lead to putting them both in mortal danger. This is a novel that works on two levels with a chase to catch a killer and to find the truth. If you like a well constructed and written mystery with a touch of the supernatural then this book is for you.

The heroine of these paranormal mystery is Allison Goodnight, homicide detective and werewolf. As the story opens Allison is viewing the body of a man violently multilated by his killer. He appears to have been savaged by a large animal, but there are only human footprints aound the body. She can tell the killer is a rogue werewolf, but it is not one known to her local clan. Allison needs to solve the case and protect her clan by concealing the supernatural identity of the killer. Allison's new partner, Zane complicates this task. He has been recently promoted to detective and is eager to learn from the more experienced Allison, but she conceals information from him, misleads him, and sends him off on busy work. The story is told alternatively from the view points of Allison and Zane. We see Allison racing to solve the case before the mounting bodycount brings unwelcome attention her clan. She is troubled by the prospect of having to kill Zane if he comes too close to the nature of the killer. Some members of her clan are very quick to decide to eliminate any possible human threats. We see Zane working around Allison to help solve the case and we see him becoming increasingly troubled by links between Allison's relatives and the killer. All werewovles are tall blond and handsome. Allison and her female relatives resemble the description of the killer. This book brings a fresh view to werewolves. They do not actually turn into wolves, but when they access their super powers, they appear as large-threatening-animals to human bystanders. The author neatly integrates the use of these powers into the detectiving part of the story - using her nose, Allison can incriminate or clear a suspect. Highly recommended for those who like their procedural mysteries combined with the supernatural and for those who like kick-[bottom] heroines like Anita Blake and Victory Nelson.

Best cop/werewolf story ever,
By
This review is from: Wilding Nights (Paperback)
A very well written and researched story concerning the investigation of a serial crime, with a unique suspect. As a cop I find it a relief that an author would put much realism into a novel of this type. Hopefully a sequel is in the works, to follow up the lifes of the characters.

Could have been better if ....,

I am a lover of almost everthing paranormal. I also love crime stories with very little romance - Criminal Intent with werewolves and/or vampires is my thing. Unfortunately, this book did not live up to the hype from several other reviewers. It was boring and had several errors in it within the first few pages (from 1% to 4%) on my kindle. One of the big errors was as they were laying out the contents of the deceased's pockets she stated there was a cell phone with keys and wallet yet a few moments later she stated there was no cell phone and thought he must of lost it running from his murderer. Several time I had to go back to reread what was written to figure out what or who the author was talking about or who was doing the internal dialogue. The story and the dialogue feels choppy and rather disorganized not to mention it was dry. The main character seems to be lacking and comes across one dimensional. I have not finished reading it yet and I will try but reading a book should be a pleasure cruise, getting to know your characters and what brings them together. This was a lone camping trip into a dark maze. Granted, it is an interesting concept but the misuse of words (though the spelling was correct) and the general confusion of who did what to whom and where is makes me want to delete it now. 1/16/12 Nope. Didn't get any better. I gave it to a younger friend to read and she only read half of it and asked me if she was being punished for something.

one of the better werewolf novels,
By
This review is from: Wilding Nights (Paperback)
Normally, I shy away from werewolf cop stories as that storyline has been done ad nauseum. But I'm glad I read this one--it was very good.
Some say the mark of a good novel is that it leaves you wanting more. You're reluctant to say good-bye to the characters and you're a bit disappointed when the journey is over. That's hard for a writer to achieve, but it's how I felt at the end of Wilding Nights. The story also gets bonus points for explaining how werewolves change shape and for tying them to other were-creatures through-out the world. It was a very clever solution-although it did open up some other unanswered questions. So, what prevented me from giving it five stars? Two things. First, there wasn't much in the way of character development. The characters you meet in the beginning are the same characters you leave at the end. As it's a short, fun read this is easily forgiven. Second, and more importantly, I reserve five stars for those books I know I'll return to again hoping to glean just a bit more from the world contained therein. For me, Wilding Nights was a one time read.

A Really Great... Must Not Put Down Til You Finish... Book!,

I read (and have read) a lot of novels. I enjoy good fantasy, mystery, historical fiction, SF, romance...just about anything that is well-written with interesting character/personality development--and with an intricate, yet understandable plot...that has a satisfying (and not depressing) ending!
I must say that this book has more than exceeded my expectations in all areas! The main characters were strong, and yet had all of the diversities of human frailities & strengths. The plot was complex, yet clearly led and built up to a thought-provokingly rewarding conclusion. Even the cover was Incredible!(I was NOT embarrassed to read it out/around co-workers & family!) Although this was not technically a romance, it did have romantic aspects regarding its character encounters; which did not detract in any way from the suspense/mystery. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it!! Just be aware, that once "hooked", you'd better have allotted some "spare" time in which to quickly finish this story...or you might just start having aspects of it invade your dreams (not nightmares--just colorful imaginings)until you finally do complete it! ENJOY!!

A Page-Turner With Teeth,
By Lee Martindale (Plano, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wilding Nights (Paperback)
I've come to expect a good read from Lee Killough, and _Wilding Nights_ does not disappoint; it exceeds. All the good stuff - tight plotting, crisp dialogue, compelling action, and a set of characters that had me begging for a sequel before I'd even finished. Especially appealing to me: an inventive take on werewolf mythology, a main character that *isn't* tortured by what she is, and the large and intriguing family unit to which she belongs. Killough puts it all together in fine fashion.

combines the supernatural with the mystery,
This review is from: Wilding Nights (Paperback)
Although humans don't know it, werewolves exist right in your community. They don't think much of Homo sapiens believing that between overpopulation and war, eventually the "weres" will inherit the earth one day. They try not to call attention to themselves because the humans have superior numbers and can easily kill them off. When homicide detective Allison Goodnight, a "were" herself, is called in to investigate a homicide she immediately knows that the victim was murdered by one of her own kind. Allison and the other "weres" on the police force are trying to track the rogue down before the humans on the case realize exactly what they're dealing with. Allison also has to seem open with her new partner without revealing things to him that could call attention to her race, a difficult juggling act at best. Lee Killough is a master storyteller who combines the supernatural with the mystery genre creates a novel that is original and fascinating to read. The protagonists take on the human race adds a touch of whimsy to a serious and complex story line. Let's hope there are more novels in the future staring this refreshingly unique heroine.
