5.0 out of 5 stars Love upon receipt!
I love this book. It has a beautiful gallery of pictures and instructions to help the crafter improve their craft. The projects in the book are animals and scenery, but with a little imagination you will be able to learn and transfer the skill to any art form.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK for beginners.
Book is good for someone who doesn't have a lot of experience but was not for the experienced carver.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wildlife Carving in Relief, Second Edition Revised and Expanded: Carving Techniques and Patterns, February 6, 2010

Very Nice book. Great patterns & ideas. This is one of my firts books for carving and there is a lot of information in it, about what tools to use for what and which woods are good for carving. And the patterns copy nice and can be used for more then just carving like pyrography.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wildlife Carving in Relief, July 12, 2007

Lora Irish puts forth in amazing detail relief carving using hand tools. The book is well worth the purchase price for the artwork alone, her teaching is masterful.

As with all books by Lora Irish, this one is beautifully illustrated. Images of moose, wolf, antelope, bears, etc are included in both shaded and line drawings. I find these to be a real help when carving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent carving book for beginners, January 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have never carved before, so I needed a book for beginners. I just finished my first project, and am very pleased. It actually looks like the one in the book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Know what you are getting, April 22, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Based on the table of contents shown and the few pictures of the "cutting depths" for the buffalo, I thought this book would go into more detail about depths. WRONG!!! The line pictures and shaded pictures are good IF you can visualize how to layer your cuts.

I am extremely disappointed in my purchase but won't send it back to Amazon as they did nothing wrong. I know I will never purchase another Lora S. Irish book on carving unless I can actually see what is in the book first.

If you have the talent to know what areas should be cut to what depth, then I guess the pictures are worth it. BUT if you are a beginner looking for a HOW TO book on relief carving this certainly is not it.

I will put this on eBay to get rid of it and try to recoup some of my wasted money.

1.0 out of 5 stars A sad disappointment...., December 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this book as a gift for a wood carver and the recipient thought I was pulling a prank on him! I didn't believe him until I looked at the book myself and the artwork is just "not our type." The hair on the animals look like flower petals, granted, to each is their own opinion and I'm NOT trying to offend the artist. From the reviews on here, I expected a better quality. In hindsight, I learned to do more research before I buy blindly on amazon.com.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great for a beginner., July 1, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Wildlife Carving in Relief: Carving Techniques and Patterns (Paperback)
While the instructions for carving are very good, particularly for a beginner, the authors patterns and illustrations are not lifelike, with the animals features magnified until they bear no resemblance to the actual animal you wish to carve. Buy the book for the carving instructions; go elsewhere if you want realistic patterns and illustrations.
