Grade 3-6–This colorful guide is filled with information and activities. Cox defines the food web of a backyard and encourages attracting wild animals not only to help them survive, but also to enjoy observing them. The environmental activities are illustrated with full-color photographs of enthusiastic children accomplishing these projects mostly without adult help. But composting, making a bog garden, and creating a bee hotel could be difficult and frustrating for children (where do you get pieces of bamboo cane, and how do you cut them to the right size?). The photographs, drawings, and collages are bright and cheery, but sometimes cluttered and distracting, and the table of contents is not easy to follow. There are some great projects and planting ideas to bring some beautiful insects and wildlife into your own backyard. There are simple plant guides as well as a visual guide to identify animal tracks. And, as always, DK uses gorgeous photography to illustrate the great earth-friendly ideas. --Kiwi Magazine

This is the most exciting gardening book I've seen! The information is thorough and these doable projects are full of beautiful and cute pictures in each step! I especially like the top 10 plants to attract bees, birds, butterflies, caterpillars, ladybugs, etc. It also shows top 10 water plants and night plants.

Thanks to this book, I finally understood how to make composts, frog ponds, bird houses, butterfly houses, moth catcher, bee hotel, stag beetle bucket, spider web catcher, wormery, newt houses, owl nest, bird feeder, bird bath, bats garden, and even more with inexpensive materials! They are also full of interesting facts! What else do you need to know!?

I got this book for my daughters, but my whole family is enjoying this book. This book is absolutely wonderful!

Easy, do-able projects, interesting to kids. I also used it for designing a night blooming fragrant garden & other wildlife habitat ideas. Projects could be done in the city too. DK books are always well put together with beautiful photography.
