Book Description

October 1992 Polar Research Series
In Alaska, a key environmental conflict has been between the needs of the traditional Eskimo economy based on subsistence hunting and the regulatory regimes of government agencies, which has sought to promote conservation of the hunted species. This has often led to serious tension between Eskimo and Regulator, and to ineffective management of the wildlife resource. This book addresses this important issue and provides a well-detailed case study of how such a mismatch of goals and objectives can be constructively reconciled. The book opens with a discussion of the issues posed by "what is effective wildlife management?", which stimulates a broad presentation of the legal evolution of wildlife and game laws in England and the United States. Then follows a chapter describing the way of life and subsistence economy of the native people, stressing the key importance of hunting to their livelihood and culture. The framework of federal, state and local wildlife regulations and their administration are then described and their shortcomings and problems highlighted. Recent co-operative management schemes for marine and terrestrial species are evaluated and it is concluded that only by such integrated schemes can effective wildlife management be achieved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alaskan Wildlife Management, July 6, 2009

This review is from: Wildlife Management and Subsistence Hunting in Alaska (Polar Research Series) (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book that was probably published before its time. What this shows is that Henry Huntington was on the cutting edge of Indigenous Wildlife issues and he continues to be so. If this book were coming out today it would probably sell much more, because it deals with a number of hot button issues, such as indigenous whaling, subsistence hunting compared with sport hunting, and other issues concerning marine mammal management. The Alaskan situation has been a classic example where Indigenous people without formal treaties negotiated with state and federal governments to at least try and come up with solutions that all parties could live with.
