4.0 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining, new angle on man vs. nature
I've spent my life in the western U.S. outdoors, but until I read this book I had no idea that a fish and game warden's life could be so interesting. Terry Grosz is not a polished writer, as mentioned by other reviewers, but he very is entertaining and obviously has a way of seeking out adventure in his love for nature. Each chapter is a fairly self-contained story,...

3.0 out of 5 stars I could wish for better writing
Terry Grosz has some good stories to tell, but I agree with the first reviewer, the book could use some editorial polish. I happen to have some knowledge of CDFG in the 60's and 70's and there are many tales worth telling. If you are interested in wildlife, it would be worth borrowing "Wildlife Wars" from the library.

Each chapter is a fairly self-contained story, which is nice for those of us who only have time for a brief read between work weeks. Grosz points out that game wardens are more likely to die violent deaths than cops, which sort of sets the stage for his action-adventure tales of wardens vs. poachers, all the while emphasizing the importance of wildlife preservation. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the western US outdoors experience, wildlife preservation and even someone just looking to be entertained.

This is the first of Terry Grotz's books that I've read but I'm hooked. Wonderful stories and insightful and interesting perspectives on the management of wildlife and our governments role. I look forward to reading "A Sword for Mother Nature".

5.0 out of 5 stars What a story!, May 11, 2000

I have yet to read the entire book, mainly because my husband will not put it down. As a current wildlife officer, he can both relate to and enjoy Terry's stories. Especially enjoyed : the Chilli story. Not to miss!

My husband is a Game Warden and I bought this for him. He could not put it down! He said it was very well written and very interesting. He then passed it along to his fellow officers, recommending it to all of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helped shape a path for me, March 16, 2008

I bought this book back when I was a junior in high school, in 2002. At the time I was considering where I wanted to go to school and what I wanted to major in. This book, and others by Terry, helped me decide that wildlife conservation was my path. I've since graduated from Humboldt State with my BS in Wildlife Management and Conservation and will be applying this fall as a Conservation Officer in Idaho. Wildlife management takes many forms, from academia to habitat management, but I've decided I can best protect "America's wildlife heritage" by being part of the first line of defense against their destruction thanks in large part to getting a idea of the field from Terry's first hand experiences. Terry also stresses the importance of community support and education if we are to have a hope of winning the wildlife wars. The field of wildlife is my passion, and Terry's books helped put me on that path.

Terry Grosz not only put himself in precarious and, often times, hilarious situations, he has a superb gift of storytelling. No other book has had me laughing so hard! Great gift!

Some of the stories in this book had me in hysterics--a new experience from a book for me. What a great writer and a great guy. I'm currently reading his 4th book and recommend them all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining set of short stories, January 18, 2011
By
This review is from: Wildlife Wars: The Life and Times of a Fish and Game Warden (Paperback)
Combines love of the natural world with a great sense of humor and adventure. I don't mind that he repeats some information (like one reviewer mentioned) because it's perfect for excepts and booktalks with my high school kids. (Many aren't great readers, so by the time they pick up a book again, they may have forgotten some details. Plus, some of us enjoy randomly turning to a page and finding a stand alone story when there's not much time to read.)

When you can't think of a thing to give your outdoor guys, this is it. I was introduced to Terry Grosz on the docudrama on Animal Planet Network and wanted to give the DVD as a gift. I could not find it; I wish it were for sale. The stories in this book are primarily the basis for the TV show. He is an excellent story teller who has a profound regard for our wildlife and game. He nails the humour in serious situations. Just a great read.
