A battle with boredom, March 22, 2011
"Wildraith's Last Battle" tells the tale of the forest goddess Wildrava, who after refusing a follower's sacrifice, is banished from the divine world and sentenced to live as a mortal. Ordered to seek out the woman who cursed her, Wildrava arrives on the material plane amid chaos. Three factions are constantly vying for power in the land. To the North there is the warlord Gilmar the Old, to the West Dulanis Butter-hair first of the herders rules the plains and to the East in the Long Forest rules Senerthan first of the hunters. Dulanis and Senerthan at one time were to be married and unite the tribes but unfortunately war erupts over a chess game (that's right, a chess game). Wildrava, taking on the name of "Wildraith" becomes involved in the territorial disputes when she aids a local village in fending off invaders using a pack of random forest animals. Needless to say, this infuriates the local leaders and Wildraith is branded as a heretic and outlaw. Like most outlaws Wildraith attracts followers who join her band and fight against the feuding province rulers. Wildraith's only purpose on the material plane is to find the mortal named Ylsa who cursed her so that she may return to the divine realm. Of course Wildraith becomes involved in much more than searching for Ylsa. Here are my thoughts on Wildraith's Last Battle;
Pros
+ Interesting premise.
+ Hand drawn illustrations.
+ Use of animals during battles added a twist to the story.
Cons
- No map.
- Bland and uninspired narrative.
- Meandering and disjointed story with no clear purpose.
- Too many inconsequential characters.
- Author's use of character's "naming trait" became confusing and got old fast. Character's names became too convoluted.
- Wildraith didn't act at all like she was being punished for being mortal.
It's never a good thing when I find myself page counting and skipping to the end of the book to see when it will be over. Unfortunately, that's exactly what I ended up doing with this book. The overall idea was an interesting one but the author really missed the mark. Filled with faceless trait-named characters the story constantly wandered from one boring passage to the next. I can definitely say this was not a book for me. As this was the first book I have read by this author I really hope all of her books don't follow the same bland writing style. Wildraith's Last Battle has definitely raised a red flag and I'd be very wary to pick up another book by the same author.
