Book Description

1 and upWiley and Grampa
This wonderfully weird and wacky early reader series delivers laugh-a-page humor that is perfect for reluctant readers.

In the seventh hysterical tale, a carton of rancid eggnog bubbles to life, devouring unfortunate citizens and plastic reindeer on the lawns of Gingham County. With the power to morph into the shape of people, the eggy menace seems unstoppable, withstanding spitballs and even a group of relentless Christmas carolers. Will Wiley and Grampa, with the help of Roberto Claus--the fruitcake-wielding owner of Santa's Happytown Shanty Village--save the day, or will the killer eggnog leave a trail of chaos and nutmeg in its slippery path?

More About the Author

Kirk was born and raised in Austin, Texas. In kindergarten, Kirk's teachers were so impressed with his demented drawings of zombies, witches and monsters that they often called his parents and even recommended a few "experts" take a look at Kirk's work. Thankfully, for Kirk's poor Mother, he grew out of his monster kick and went on to study film at the University of Texas which inspired him to move to sunny Los Angeles to pursue his dream of working retail and living in a luxury un-air-conditioned apartment. After years of reassessment, reflection and hard work, Kirk has finally realized his true calling... drawing demented pictures of zombies, witches and monsters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for "reluctant readers", whatever it is that means, October 27, 2011

This review is from: Wiley & Grampa #7: Night of the Living Eggnog (Wiley and Grampa) (Paperback)
Silly? Sure. A little gross? Absolutely. Cheerful? In spades. It's not cheap humor or all toilet humor, but it's not the most sophisticated word play either. There's always a crazy threat, (Bigfoot, aliens, animated eggnog), a crisis, and an insane plan to save the world. Wiley and Grampa, who are clearly fond of each other, team up to save the day. Sometimes the cat helps, or Wiley's friend, or Gramma.
The point is that there is a plot, there actually is some creative wordplay, there are funny throwaway jokes in the illustrations, there is cheerful loopiness, and there is a happy ending with a moral. Gosh, that sounds like Shakespeare, (except for the illustrations part.)
And, unlike some of the books out there, there is no veiled contempt for the characters or the gullible, unwashed readers. It's not condescending or edgy; it's just silly fun. I don't think I'd build my library around these, but there's certainly room on the shelf for a couple.

My 8 year old son loves the Wiley and Grampa books. He's read them all, which is great because he is a reluctant reader.
