Book Description

4 and upP and up
Living in the back of Oscar’s Pizza Palace in Washington, D.C., Wilky is a small bug with big dreams. His uncle Julius was a great adventurer, and Wilky longs to follow in his footsteps. But when he stows away in a pizza box and winds up at the most famous address in the country—on the day of a big state dinner honoring the president of France—it looks like Wilky’s first big adventure may turn out to be his last. With the President and his staff in crisis mode and hot on his trail, Wilky has some powerful shoes to outrun—but if there’s one thing a cockroach knows how to do, it’s survive.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3–Wilky, a small cockroach who lives in the back of a DC pizza parlor, wants to follow in the footsteps of his adventurous uncle Julius. His mother encourages him to stay put and out of trouble, but the youngster has been hit by wanderlust. The first chance he gets, he stows away in a pizza box and winds up in the Oval Office. A madcap search ensues, as the President says, FIND THAT COCKROACH! And step on it! Wilky manages to outsmart all of the Presidents men and women (including the Exterminator General) and in the end, the Commander in Chief declares a truce and Wilky is named the White House Cockroach. Schneiders zany illustrations are filled with sophisticated humor. The story, however, is slight and the writing is occasionally awkward. Most libraries can skip this silly bit of fluff.–Wendy Woodfill, Hennepin County Library, Minnetonka, MN

From Booklist

Cartoonist Howie Schneider, writer-illustrator of Chewie Louie (2000), offers an adventure featuring a plucky young cockroach. Wilky lives with his big family in a pizza parlor across the street from the White House. Hitching a ride in a pizza box one day, Wilky is delivered to the Oval Office. Furious, the president calls in the Bug Czar, the Minister of Creepy Crawlies, and the Secretary of Small Creatures. The line "FIND THAT COCKROACH!' he roared. 'And step on it!'" will set off giggles in children old enough to get the joke. Younger ones may enjoy the extended chase that ensues, ending improbably in a truce, a job offer, and Secret Service protection for Wilky's cockroach clan. Brightly illustrated with colored pencils and broadly comical in effect, this picture book will amuse, at different points, both adults and children. Carolyn Phelan

Howie Schneider, Wilky, the White House Cockroach (Putnam, 2006)

Seriously, I gotta ask: where do people come up with these ideas? Wherever it may be, I'm glad they do. In this bright, spunky kids' book, Wilky, a cockroach who lives with his family in a pizza joint near the White House, hitches a ride to the Oval Office in a pizza box, sparking an international incident that has all of Washington scrambling to figure out how to placate both the bug populace and the French. (Yeah, I know.) It's a kid-sized satire on how things run in Washington, and makes a good counterpoint to My Senator And Me: A Dog's Eye View Of Washington, D.C., Ted Kennedy's recent dog's-eye-view kids' book of politics. *** ½
