Warm and Fuzzy,
By Susan (Central Virginia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Will You Come Back for Me? (Hardcover)
Starting school brings about many new emotions in children. Will You Come Back for Me? by Ann Tompert addresses a child's fear and anxiety about being separated from mom. The child in this story is dispondent after mother leaves and just watches for her return. The mother calms the child and tells her she is leaving her heart with the child and will surely return to her. She crafts a heart for the child to carry with her as a reminder. The child then makes new friends at school, knowing her mother will return. An excellent, feel-good, warm and fuzzy book. I would recommend reading it to any child who is beginning preschool or daycare, or any child who is having trouble separating from mom.

This book is exactly what my 4 year old needs. We tried starting preschool and had severe separation anxiety and had to pull him out. This book speaks directly to those fears and helps us, as parents, get on his level. We have lengthy discussions on what is happening in the book. We are enrolling him again this year so we are reading this book daily (and others, but this one is the best).

I bought this book 15+ years ago for my then 3 year old son who was starting preschool. He had asked me this exact question. (Will you coe back for me?) This is a sweet reassuring story that will help a child understand that Mommy ALWAYS comes back. I still have this book tucked away with my son's other "must keep forever" books and toys.

If a child has this fear in his/her head about you coming back to pick him up, then maybe it is a great choice. Otherwise there is no reason to place this fear in a child's head.
If you'd like to prepare a child for preschool, such books like "Maisy Goes to Preschool: A Maisy First Experiences Book" will be a perfect choice. It is important to concentrate on positive aspect of a child going to a preschool - "Soon you will go to preschool. You'll find new friends., etc." A good book like I mentioned above will prepare your child for a new experience. And when kids are prepared they much easier going through new experiences. |
