Book Description

February 3, 2004
For most of the 20th century, the work of cartoonist and graphic novelist Will Eisner defined the art of comic book storytelling in the U.S. and throughout the world. This hardcover collection of Eisner's gorgeous pencil sketches and groundbreaking designs is a must-have for any pop-culture enthusiasts and fans of comic books. Culled from many decades' worth of work, the Sketchbook presents the world as seen through Will Eisner's eyes, with introductory notes for each of the eleven sections. From his observations of his friends and loved ones hustling through their daily lives to witnessing those quiet moments when no one is supposed to be watching, Eisner's keen perception and steadfast hand capture the essence of what it means to be a true artist.

More About the Author

WILL EISNER was born William Erwin Eisner on March 6, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York. By the time of his death on January 3, 2005, Will Eisner was recognized internationally as one of the giants in the field of sequential art, a term he coined.

In a career that spanned nearly eight decades -- from the dawn of the comic book to the advent of digital comics - Will Eisner was truly the 'Orson Welles of comics' and the 'father of the Graphic Novel'. He broke new ground in the development of visual narrative and the language of comics and was the creator of The Spirit, John Law, Lady Luck, Mr. Mystic, Uncle Sam, Blackhawk, Sheena and countless others.

During World War II, Will Eisner used the comic format to develop training and equipment maintenance manuals for the US Army. After the war this continued as the Army's "PS Magazine" which is still being produced today. Will Eisner taught Sequential Arts at the New York School of Visual Arts. The textbooks that he wrote based on his course are still bestsellers. In 1978, Will Eisner wrote "A Contract with God," the first modern Graphic Novel. This was followed by almost 20 additional graphic novels over the following 25 years.

The "Oscars" of the Comic Industry are called The Eisner Awards, and named after Will Eisner. The Eisners are presented annually before a packed ballroom at Comi-Con International in San Diego, America's largest comics convention.

Wizard magazine named Eisner "the most influential comic artist of all time." Michael Chabon's Pulitzer-prize winning novel "Kavalier and Clay" is based in good part on Eisner. In 2002, Eisner received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Federation for Jewish Culture, only the second such honor in the organization's history, presented by Pulitzer-prize winning cartoonist Art Spiegelman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost like holding original Will Eisner sketches, August 4, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Will Eisner Sketchbook - New Edition (Hardcover)
Length:: 0:20 Mins

The Will Eisner Sketchbook is positively amazing! I'm saying that because I read his comics and do a bit of cartooning myself.

The book is a clothed hardcover, perfect bind with 200 pages. The paper is thick and mildly yellow.

On these pages are the best reproduction of pencil drawings I've even seen. As I rub my thumb across the textured cross hatches, I thought I would smudge the paper and pick up graphite on my thumb. It's almost like holding Will Eisner's original sketches in hand! Brilliant.

Inside, the sketches are grouped accordingly to the titles he has created. It includes The Spirit, A Contract with God, A Life Force, The Dreamer, To The Heart of Storm, The Neighborhood Dropsie Avenue, The Last Hero, A Family Matter, The Princess and the Frog, Last Day in Vietnam and Minor Miracles.

These are the concept drawings and panel layouts for his comics. There are even character designs. While some of the sequences are long with dialogue included, they are not complete so you'll still have to get his original books for the stories. You can see how Will Eisner designs his panels and writes his stories. It's all very inspiring to see the work-in-progress of the master comic artist. Since this is a sketchbook, there are many that never made it to the final art.

This book is highly recommended, more so if you draw comics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eisner is the Best!, March 20, 2009
This review is from: The Will Eisner Sketchbook - New Edition (Hardcover)
Wow! I have almost everything that has been published of Eisner's Comics. But this book is so special. I could see his pencil sketches of many classic Comics from Spirit or his recent production. The edition is lovely, a brown hard cover book. Fantastic.

Eisner's gone now,so anything to remember and see the mind of a master. Working at his craft and showing how its done is more than worth it. My only regret is I never meet the man,and I didn't buy this till after he past.
P.S. Of course the Spirits in here.
