Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The 13-year-old son of a small-town minister turns to music to escape from his parents' intense pressure, but his younger brother has no such defense. PW found this a "hard-hitting, deeply moving story." Ages 12-up.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read!, September 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: I Will Call It Georgie's Blues (Puffin Books) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is about an emotionally disturbed little boy named Georgie, who loves music, so in the end after many twists and turns his older brother writes him a piano piece which he calls Georgie's Blues. It may not sound that great by my description, but if you do read it you will see how great this book really is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Deserves to be better known, June 27, 2010

This book deserves to be better known. It is a subtle and nuanced portrait of a family that, in spite of the lack of overt abuse, is nonetheless deeply flawed and unhealthy. The ending doesn't tie things up neatly, but is nonetheless both heartbreaking and satisfying. I cared very much about Neal, Georgie, and Mrs. T, and would love to know what happened to these characters ten years on. I'm impressed by how Newton kept the tension level high even in chapters where not much "happened." The understanding of mental illness may be a bit outdated, but then again there are no "conditions" spelled out.
