Editorial Reviews

Review

"Oh, yes, you will read this book. You’ll be reeled in by the feisty, angular, frequently exciting digital illustrations, not to mention that confrontational title."—Booklist "Suggest[s] that sharing a book with a parent can be reassuring, and [the] cheerful use of imagination makes for an enjoyable read." —School Library Journal

This book got a great response from some jaded Kindergarteners! I wish I could find more smart, funny, boldly-illustrated, cumulative tales like this for them. Thank you, Cece Meng and Joy Ang!

My 6 year old (and his whole classroom's) favorite book! A parent read this book to my son's classroom and ever since then, all the children request he reads it over and over and over again. A child states he will not read this book no matter what hilarious situations arise. A favorite in our library. Great book and quick delivery.

I bought this colorful children's book for my grandson for Christmas. It appealed to his sometimes contradictory moods (at age 3, almost 4). I have been assured by his mother that he loves it, that he often asks for it, and even says some of the contents by heart. It is a nice book gift for those children whose mood swings often baffle us. It is a very successful gift.

A Kid's Review on February 16, 2012
Format: Hardcover
I loved this Funny book. There is a boy that is stubburn about reading. He was not a happy reader at all. My favorite part was when he shouts about not wanting to read. This story made me feel all giggly inside. The illustrations seemed perfect because they matched the words! The theme of the story is that it is good to read. I would recommend this book for kids in grades K-3. I think people that don't like to read would like this book.

What will it take to convince a reluctant reader to embrace the power of books?

The little boy isn’t so sure that anything can…he is very firm in his convictions that he will not be reading this book, thank you very much. Not even a little bit. Not even if you force him to. Not even, in fact, if you hung him upside down by one toe over a cliff with sharks below and dragons above. That’s how much he is not going to read this book.

Or…is he?

I Will Not Read This Book is a bright and silly tale that will appeal to youngsters, especially those who are a little more reluctant to read or be read to. The illustrations are vivid and colorful and goofy and the story itself has a lot of good repetition to draw in young listeners. Above all, it will make readers and listeners laugh out loud as the determined boy struggles against books. (Of course, he finally comes around in the end, as we know he must.)

Format: Hardcover
It is bedtime and the boy in this book says he will not read the book in his hand because "reading is hard and I don't read fast and sometimes there are words I don't know." He gives multiple death-defying scenarios in which even then he will not read the book until the end when he says, if mom catches him, then he will read the book.

The little boy in the book is afraid to read the book but by the end he knows it will be all right if he has someone to read along beside him. The illustrations are adorable and colorful. By page 10 it becomes very repetitive in Green Eggs and Ham style. But for a reluctant or early reader this is perfect because repetitiveness encourages success. The repetitiveness is silly fun as well so the reader does not become bored.

This book is advertized for ages 4-8. I'm not sure the 4 year old range would enjoy this as much, but definitely grades k-3.
