Editorial Reviews

Review

A well-researched and superbly written book on a major facet of Will Rogers' contributions to humanity: entertainment. Insightful, warm and readable. Tour this wonderful treasure, guided by revealing quotes from Will's movies. This masterful book makes the case for the release of more Will Roger's films and enriches our understanding of this unique man. --Joseph Carter and Michelle Lefebvre -Carter, former directors Will Rogers Memorial

Style Seemlessly blends Rogers' quotes with the storyline. Rogers' work on stage and screen...cover in depth. --Classic Images Shows Rogers was as sharp about Hollywood as he was about everything else. --Entertainment Weekly Marvelous homage to Will Rogers...superb photographs. Silents Majority --Tulsa World

A worthy addition to the literature about Will Rogers. This latest Rogers testimonial distinguishes itself from the pack. --Pueblo Chieftain I thought I knew everything there was to know about Oklahoma's favorite son, but Will Rogers, Performer goes into far more detail that I ever read before. Significant. --The Journal Record --Sunday Oklahoman

5.0 out of 5 stars "Once a man holds public office he is absolutely no good for honest work.", January 7, 2008
This review is from: Will Rogers, Performer (Paperback)
Before his untimely death in a 1935 Alaskan plane crash, Will Rogers was an entertainer and political commentator. His homespun cowboy act (he literarily did rope tricks to entertain his audience while engaging in a patter of conversation mixing jokes with acute observation) launched him into the public eye. He would go on to star in successful comedy movies and be something of an over the airwaves during the golden age of radio. Now in the pages of "Will Rogers, Performer", a profusely illustrated biography by Richard and Mary Maturi, a whole new generation can become acquainted with the Will Roger's legacy of wit and wisdom as his professional career as one of America's most popular and thoughtful entertainers. It may prove surprising how universal and enduring Roger's comments are more than seventy years later. "Once a man holds public office he is absolutely no good for honest work." Simply stated, "Will Rogers, Performer" is very highly recommended reading and the next best thing to visiting the Will Rogers Memorial Museum in Claremore, Oklahoma!
