Book Description

3 and up
Because Matthew cannot sleep, his mother weaves a dream for him in which he and a magical seagull soar high above the clouds, until they discover a storm-tossed ship that they must rescue.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-When Matthew has trouble falling asleep, he and his mother invent a dream story that involves more adventure than rest. His toy boat and green quilt become part of a nautical tale in which his dog is one of a canine crew unable to cope with a broken mast. Matthew imagines himself saving the day and earning the captain's crown before falling asleep. The overlong text seems unlikely to produce a restful response in readers, and Degen's watercolor illustrations add to the air of busyness. Human characters often assume stiff poses and lack the attractiveness of the animals in the supporting roles. A disappointing candidate for bedtime fare.

From Booklist

Ages 3-6. When his mother suggests that there are better ways of getting to sleep than doing somersaults, Matthew asks for a dream. So, cuddling him in the rocker, she sets up the basics--how he'll get into the dream (on a strong seagull) and what he will feel and see. It isn't long before Matthew begins to direct his own sea adventure. After he's assembled a cast, Mother tucks him in bed, and the book concludes with Matthew and his dream crew departing to "magical places." The watercolor, pencil, and gouache pictures in Matthew's wide-awake world are carefully bordered; the borders disappear as the dream develops and objects from the bedroom world appear on the dream sea. A book to bring home to bedtime bouncers. Mary Harris Veeder
