Editorial Reviews

Review

"The answers they receive vary in the details, but all affirm that the child is special and will still be cherished when the new sibling arrives....Howarth's sunny watercolor and ink illustrations match the upbeat tone of the bouncy, rhyming text. In the final pages, the little boy questions his mother as he readies for bed. (In a lovely bit of visual continuity, the animals from the earlier parts of the book appear in some form in his room, raising the possibility that the earlier segments might have been part of his own dramatic play.)" School Library Journal
"[T]here's a sophisticated level of expertise at work, evincing the ability to ladle on reassurance without being sappy or boring. Both grownups and kids should find that its appeal has plenty of staying power-at least nine months' worth." Publishers Weekly

My 3-year old daughter loves this book and asks to read it over and over again. We checked it out of the library along with several other "new baby" books, and this is one of her favorites. Nice rhyming sentiments, darling illustrations, very soothing and reassuring. In addition to different animal mother/child pairs, such as cats, mice, polar bears, ducks, and bunnies, the last set is a human mother and boy. I appreciated that inclusion and the feeling that all kinds of families have baby brothers and sisters, especially for a child like mine that pretends to be various animals on a regular basis, but then reminds me she is still a "human bean". Our other favorite books on this subject are "Love That Baby" by Kathryn Lasky/Jennifer Plecas, "Big Sister Now" by Annette Sheldon/Karen Maizel, "Too Small for Honey Cake" by Gill Lobel/Sebastien Braun, and "Big Panda, Little Panda" by Joan Stimson.

My eldest daughter initially had a rough time when her little sister was coming along. She was actually pretty excited for a little sister, but all the attention the new baby was getting was putting her off a bit. We rented this from the library years later, and I really wish we had this book when #2 was coming. It's really layman terms for older siblings that mommy's love doesn't diminish, it multiplies. Saying it is one thing, but it is always so nice to have your child hear it from another source. The book is perfect for toddlers, but my 5 year old enjoys this as well. It is in a sing-song poem format, easy to read and follow, and just a sweet book overall.
Some people were nice enough to get my daughter a gift at #2's shower, I think this book is a great idea to older siblings when another kid is coming along. This is definitely getting added to our children's library.

My two year old son was having such a hard time adapting to life with his new baby brother. This book is a lifesaver! He can relate perfectly to the concerns voiced by the young characters and is so reassured by the mothers' responses. As I read the mothers' words, he snuggles in close, smiles, puts his arm around me, tells me he loves me so much, etc. It is absolutely perfect. He has started to be much more affectionate and less aggressive toward the baby, too.

I stumbled on this book at the library & got teary-eyed as I read it to my daughter because it's so touching. I bought several copies & gave them as shower gifts to friends expecting their 2nd (or 3rd, or...) babies - everyone loved it. One family told me it was really helpful dealing with the jealousy child #1 felt after her baby brother was born.
