Paul Verhoeven prefers the former, which is how the Criterion DVD was presented. The MGM release being the latter.

I surely hope it is 1.66 to 1. Several years ago I compared the 2 releases and the 1.66 ratio shows the same width with slightly more vertical information than the 1.85 to 1. I even compared the 1.85 version to the full screen version aired on Showtime and the full screen 1.33 version still showed more height than the 1.85 version. That means the 1.33 Full Frame version is uncropped. It did show slightly less width. Witht some scenes it was nearly impossible to ascertain that any horizontal information was lost. Bottom line.... I prefer the 1.66 to 1 ratio.
