I shoot with a Canon 40d - so I don't have direct experience connecting the 600ex-rt to the 1d Mark III. However, the photography sites that I regularly visit state that the 600ex-rt is compatible with the Mark III and can take advantage of the autofocus system specific to the Mark III.

I just used my 3 600EX-RT's with my EOS 1D Mark III, and all worked perfectly. You can configure each flash unit, plus you can make some adjustments via the camera's menu.
