Cather devoted herself to her craft, and her short stories, novels, and poetry reflect her meticulous attention to character, time, and place. Wooten's seamless account details her subject's childhood and work as a journalist, teacher, and editor before becoming a writer. Attention is paid to her novels and major stories; brief summaries, public reactions, and Cather's feelings about particular works are revealed. However, Wooten's writing style is sometimes simplistic, and the black-and-white photographs are often dark and murky.
