Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Wannabe pop queen Willa Ford disses "cheesy (lyrics) about butterflies, sunshine and candy" in the liner notes of her debut album. She might actually score the attempted points against the likes of Mariah Carey and Mandy Moore if her own songs didn't cling desperately to a handful of similarly radio-ready templates. Here horny ("I Wanna Be Bad"), there bitchy ("Joke's on You"), everywhere wistfully lookin'-for-love ("Tender," "Prince Charming"), Ford hardly stakes out her own vocal turf either. She draws on third-hand Britney affectations and the occasional Carey-like dog-whistle squeal, while various production teams cobble together similarly derivative tracks. Ford's romantic fireworks with a Backstreet Boy brought her a small notoriety long before this CD's appearance, and "Tired" makes it clear that she already considers herself a big-enough name that listeners will respond to gripes about fame she hasn't yet achieved. As if. --Rickey Wright

3.0 out of 5 stars (3-1/2 stars) Underrated, August 26, 2002
There's more to Amanda Williford (no, Willa Ford isn't her real name) than being Nick Carter's ex-girlfriend and making a sorry guest spot on the short-lived "Raising Dad". She has a very good singing voice, and she also has a unique style about herself (dress and subject matter).

If you're looking for a Britney Spears or Mandy Moore-esque album, then look somewhere else. Willa tells us straight off that she's not about that on "Tired", even though that song could use a rewrite or two. The only other thing most people know about her is her nasty-girl image, as shown on the hit "I Wanna Be Bad" (though that song features a very generic rap from Royce Da 5'9"); her nasty side continues to show on "Don't You Wish" and "Ooh Ooh". She cuts a cheatin' man loose on "Did Ya Understand That", but on "Tender", the only slow jam, she adequately explains actions like that.

Sometimes Willa's style may not be relatable to many people, particularly the last two songs ("Haunted Heart" and "Dare"), but as I said before, her style is unique (eerie, perhaps). "Prince Charming" is good until she starts giving shout-outs, and the bridges to "Don't You Wish" and "Joke's On You" sound a little off-key. But this album still deserves a listen. It's not exactly one of those rush-out-and-get-it albums, but it's worth a listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars *Willa Ford- A Girl that SINGS her mind*, July 21, 2001
By Ashley (The Land of Oz) - See all my reviews
She is the best female vocalist that has came out in a LONG time~ SHe definitley has a huge musical future that's ONLY beginning~

1. I Wanna Be Bad- Ya know that lil voice inside ur head that every once in a while goes "I wanna be bad?" This song brings out that voice~ Great song to sing and dance to~

2. Did Ya' Understand That- Have u ever wondered why u liked or stayed w/ that loser guy that u didnt need? Willa understands that this guy is no good and she no longer needs him! So she tells him how it is~ A great girl power song~

3. Ooh Ooh- This song will get stuck in your head! Fun song~

4. Tired- She really expresses her views on this song~

5. This song is awesome! She's telling this guy he thought he was so sly but she was messing around too!

6. Tender- She shows a softer side in this song. Every girl should be able to relate at leats a lil bit to this song~

7. Don't You Wish- This song isnt one of my favorites but I like it!

8. Prince Charming- This is a cute song about finding ur one Prince Charming~ Nice beat and lyrics!

9. Somebody Take The Pain Away- It's a great song! Listen to the lyrics. There was pain behind this song. It related to me w/ a certain ending of a relationship.

10. Haunted Heart- It has a cool beat to it!

11. Dare- Really fun song~

I think EVERYONE should own this CD!~ I LOVE it~

1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing New, July 19, 2001
By A Customer
This CD is nothing the average pop fan hasn't heard. The only difference is that, rather than going to a professional songwriter, Willa Ford wrote her own cheesy pop lyrics.

Her voice is nothing to jump about; she can barely handle her own simple melodies. And when she blatantly goes off-pitch in Joke's On You and Dare, you can do nothing but laugh.

And in Tired, the self-glorifying egomaniac's theme song, the line "One hit wonder melodies who cannot sing a note," seems to be more autobiographical than anything else. Lets hope the title is prophetic, and that Willa will be a thing of the past REAL soon.
