The best and only book on the Willamette geared locomotive,
By JimH@tenforward.com (Port Angeles, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Willamette Locomotive (Paperback)
The Willamettes were the only geared locomotives produced in the Northwest and designed specifically for Northwest logging. This book gives an excellant history of the development of the Willamette steam locomotives. The historical photos are outstanding as are the carefully researched history of each of the 36 locomotives produced. This is a "must have" book for the serious logging fan or for the casual student of logging and lumbering as it was in the first half of the century. For the modeler, this book, it's photos, and drawings would provide an outstanding starting place for scratchbuilding one of these rare machines.

A fascinating volume.,

This review is from: The Willamette Locomotive (Hardcover)
"The Willamette Locomotive" is a fascinating story of a compact but mighty large-gear locomotive.Steve Hauff and Jim Gertz do a workmanlike job of examining how, in the early 1920s, Oregon's Willamette Iron and Steel Works produced over 30 of these power-horses to specifically meet the formidable demands of Northwest loggers. Unlike other trains of their day, the Willamettes were able to perform despite rough tracks, unbelivable grades, and little maintenance. There are over 250 b&w photos, and many of them are sharp and detailed. |
