This is the first of two books professor Alan Warner wrote on William Allingham in the 1970s. The other is: William Allingham (The Irish Writers Series). Since both have material not in the other volume and no more recent look at Allingham seems available, I recommend it for a quick train ride's read to those deeply curious to know more about the author of a poem or two you might have seen in an anthology.

Allingham is a minor, Irish poet and somewhat more important diarist who moved in English literary circles, getting to know some he made heroes of--Tennyson and Carlyle, primarily, but also the Brownings and D.G. Rossetti, who was more a contemporary than idol. Written in a time long before his diary or other works were free online, this particular little pamphlet presents some interesting samples of his conversations with literary luminaries and a summary of his life and background, plus a few pages of his poetry beyond what you'll find in the anthologies.
