5.0 out of 5 stars Flicker, November 27, 2010
This review is from: William Maltese's Flicker: #1 Book of Answers (Paperback)
Flicker, a tale of intrigue, adventure, mystery, and suspense.

It seems as though you are reading from a teen's point of view, even though it is not narrated. However, as an adult you can assess what it's like and feel their pains - both teen and elder. It's a story well told, that can actually 'flicker' back into your daily life, when it comes to adult/teen relationships.

The menagerie of mythical (or are they?) and/or supernatural beings and how they connect, react toward, or avoid contact with each other is as entertaining as the story as a whole. It takes involvement of oneself to keep the characters in perspective, as to what they are or what they can become, and their secrets kept from even allies.

The author is very descriptive in his text; you feel you are at each location. You see the landscapes, know the floor plans of the buildings, discern the colors and textures, hear the sounds, smell the air, and feel the presences all about you. It's as though you are there, watching what is going on firsthand.

A story well worth reading.

This review is from: William Maltese's Flicker: #1 Book of Answers (Paperback)
Flicker is a gentle introduction to the genre of occult fiction, where the strange world of candle readers, shape shifters, werewolves and vampires prey upon their next victim.

Central to the story are Roger, Mary, Trish and Melissa, the Remoth family, who come from a long ancestral line of candle readers. Melissa Remoth has a recurring dream in which she sees a young girl, no older than she, with dark hair and eyes, clothed in a blue robe, holding a blue candle. This dream befuddles the whole family, and they set out on a candle-reading mission to Dry Wash Gulch to make contact with the girl in blue.

Parents Roger and Mary Remoth find their candle reading powers diminishing with age, and in an effort to keep their family tradition alive they rely on daughters Trish and Melissa to hone their skills. Melissa, a born candle reader, aspires to their wishes, but Trish has reservations, and part way through the reading she feigns a headache from staring into the flickering candle flame and returns to the comfort of her tent to rest. A short time later, Roger, Mary and Melissa hear screams coming from the tent and rush over to see what is wrong. They discover Trish missing and suspect that someone or something has kidnapped her. After a lengthy search, to no avail, the family decides that it is time to call in the authorities to help in the search; but not before they conjure up a story as to why they were in Dry Wash Gulch at that time of the night.

As the story unveils you will meet other supporting characters like Gyle Gril, Gregory Ranlin, Sydney, Grandpa Jimmy, Johnny-three-spirits, Matty, Briana James, Coach Waynright, Uxana, Zila and Timothy, to name a few, and others from Flicker High that add a dimension of intrigue and suspense to the story.

Many beasts and beasties roam the streets in the town of Flicker. Who are they? Why have they come here?

Take a walk on the wild side with international best selling Author, William Maltese, as his story of magic and myth unfolds. Those footsteps you here in the quite hours as you walk the streets and countryside of Flicker may not be your own. Go ahead! Read it! I dare you.....
