More About the Author

"The Emperor's Library" was inspired by a valley in New Zealand's South Island. Stumbling on this hidden spot bathed in the late afternoon sunlight, I decided that it was the place for the beginning of a story. It is here, then, that the first events in "The Flight from Kar" are set; it is also here to which the main characters return again and again over the course of the three novels. The cover of "The Flight from Kar," while not a precise rendering of the scene, suggests the magic it held for me that day many years ago. (The color photo of me with my partner (I'm the one on the left) was taken during that trip. The black-and-white drawing looks west over Bent Lake to the Valley of Women and gives you an idea of how I imagined the book's setting.)

Readers of "The Emperor's Library" will observe my love of mountains, beaches, parrots, and cooking. I wonder if they will be able to guess that my favorite novelists are Jane Austen, Dickens, and Proust. Or that I play the piano (Chopin, Brahms, that sort of thing) and live in Portland, Oregon. (Alas, with no parrot.)
