Although I like Volume 2 better, this soundtrack is the one that most "Romeo + Juliet" aficionados will want to own. This soundtrack is the one with all the complete songs on it, including some really great songs by some great artists.

2.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Soundtrack
While the movie itself was uneven, the soundtrack was flawless. I was a freshman in high school way back in 1996 when I bought this soundtrack simply because I really liked "Lovefool" by the Cardigans. After one listen to the cd, I realised that there were MANY songs just as good or better than that! While "Lovefool" did get very annoying due to...

This review is from: William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet: Music From The Motion Picture (1996 Version) [Enhanced CD] (Audio CD)
Although I like Volume 2 better, this soundtrack is the one that most "Romeo + Juliet" aficionados will want to own. This soundtrack is the one with all the complete songs on it, including some really great songs by some great artists.

Garbage's "#1 Crush" is a pop-goth song that stays true to the feel of the movie, and "Young Hearts, Run Free" is a great techno song by Kym Mazelle. I can't stand to hear "Lovefool" by the Cardigans one more time, but for many, it might be the highlight of the album. "Little Star" by Stina Nordenstam is a trippy minimalist delight, and "You and Me Song" by the Wannadies is one of those pieces of pop fluff you think you heard in "So I Married an Axemurderer" and not "Romeo + Juliet".

The tracks I mostly appreciate, and that make the album worth checking out are: "Kissing You" by Des'ree (the love theme of the movie, and a truly beautiful sappy romantic song), "Everybody's Free" by vocal dynamo Quindon Tarver (I was shocked when I saw that this album didn't include Tarver's performance of Prince's "When the Doves Cry" but then it was released shortly after on Volume 2), and "Talk Show Host" by Radiohead (in their pre-OK Computer days).

All the other songs make the CD part of your complete soundtrack experience. If you want to own the pop songs that gave this movie a lot of its amazing audio depth, then get this CD.

Another old favorite of mine, this soundtrack combines many different styles of music. Garbage, which is one of my favorite groups, appears on the very first track with their now-famous "#1 Crush" (Think: "I would die for you, I would die for you...".) And this is also the CD that made the Cardigan's "Lovefool" (Think: "Love me, love me, say that you love me...") a hit. Des'ree's romantic "Kissing You" will remind you of everything the Romeo and Juliet legacy stands for, and other songs such as Kim Myzelle's "Young Hearts Run Free" and the Wannadie's "You and Me Song" will make even the shyest among you start dancing! Mundy's "To You I Bestow" is very romantic and noble. This is not one of those soundtracks with one good song worth listening to and the rest throw-away-able. Almost every song is great, and this is a CD you will want to hold on to- I know because I have had it for a really long time. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars If You Don't Own This, Your CD Collection Is Confused, August 23, 2001

Romeo + Juliet is THE best soundtrack I've ever owned. It does envoke a very specific mood...but you can definitely let it all out when you're singing along with this. There is a sense of darkness throughout, lightening at times, but ever present.

For the most part, the album is upbeat. "Young Hearts Run Free" may even provoke a smile. The real treasure lies in the dark reality of songs like "Local God", "Whatever", and "To You I Bestow" (arguably THE best song on this album). "Kissing You" is a wonderful love song, appropriately placed, and "Little Star" provides a calming lift after the turmoil of the rest of the album.

This album is unquestionably a must for anyone who shows even a remote interest in music. Romeo + Juliet is a tool to help you deal with the chaos that is life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect compliment to one of the best films ever!, February 23, 2006
This review is from: William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet: Music From The Motion Picture (1996 Version) [Enhanced CD] (Audio CD)
Baz's masterpiece that was Romeo and Juliet was heavy on the mainstream MTV vibe and so justly so is the soundtrack to go along with it. Starting off on a great note with "#1 Crush" by Garbage this soundtrack serves the best track here right off the bat. Followed up nicely by Everclears "LOcal God" one of my personal favorite Everclear songs. Everclear was prime choice for a track here since they were, at the time, standing tall on the success of their "Afterglow" album. One Inch Punch serves a great track with "Pretty Piece of Flesh" which is sported in one of the films most memerable scenes. Not a Butthole Surfers fan but there track here is a standout, believe it or not. Things are slowed down with "Angel" a beautiful song that brings to mind memories of Claire Danes in her costume and the slow yet soulful "KIssing You" by Des'ree is welcome. Radio Heads "Talk show Host" is great but it's the closing "You and Me Song" that stands out above all, mostly because it doesn't seem to fit with the vibe of the CD, but it's escused because it's such a great song. I cant think of a bad track here, everyone is worth listening to...Highly Highly recomended!

I liked the movie, but never really get too worked up over it. I walked into my friends room and he was playing a CD, and it kept playing songs I had heard before and liked, I asked if he had burned it, he said it was the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack. I was surprised to hear it actually, I didn't remember the soundtrack being this good. It really is excellent. From The Cardigans to Radiohead, it's all pretty good pop rock music. I especially love Talk Show Host by Radiohead and #1 Crush by Garbage. There are a few weak links, but that doesn't matter, the overwhelming majority of the material is worthwhile. Definitely worth a listen.

If you loved "Romeo + Juliet" as much as I did, then you will definitely love the soundtrack, too. Garbage's "#1 Crush" opens the cd and sets the mood for the listening experience. The song is absolutely haunting. If you've ever had a serious, serious crush on someone, this is the song for you. If you're anything like me, you will find yourself rocking out to it with your hairbrush in the bathroom in front of the mirror. I'm not a huge fan of Radiohead, but their contribution to the album, "Talk Show Host", one of their best songs to date (and one of my favorites), is another one that you will have on repeat. It's got an infectious melody that stays in your head for days on end. Des'ree's "Kissing You" is worth buying the cd in itself. In my personal opinion, it's her best and strongest song to date. It's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, and it really captures the emotion and spirit of the whole movie. No matter how many times I listen to it, I still find myself breathless at the end every time.
This cd has a little bit of everything for everyone. It's got the rock, the dance, the punk, and the ballads. It would be an excellent addition to any CD collection, whether you've seen "Romeo + Juliet" or not. This is definitely the best movie soundtrack I've ever heard. Happy listening!

This cd is a great compilation of artists and styles that are married beautifully to Baz Lurhman's vision of Romeo and Juliet. The cd is filled with songs that evoke lust, excitement, danger, love, doubt, anger, revenge, and all the other emotions William Shakespear wrote of in Romeo and Juliet. A great cd to rock to even if you haven't seen the movie.

This is an excellent album. Tracks 1,5,7,9,12 and especially 11 are great. Radiohead and Garbage, two very popular alternative bands, contribute great examples of their talent (11+1). Des'Ree preforms an amazing love ballad with "Kissing You" (track 5), using her beutiful voice and a lovely back-up piano. Little Star (track 12) is also very nice and very relaxing. Many of the other songs that I didn't mention above were not very memorable, but not bad to listen to. I only dislike tracks 4 and 13, but that is not to say that they are not enjoyable to fans of that sort of music. Track four is very hard rock, unlike most of the rest of the album. Romeo and Juliet is one of the best soundtracks I own. Also, if you like soundtracks, check out "Go", "Stigmata" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer-The Album"(TV show soundtrack, not movie)

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best soundtracks ever, February 11, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet: Music From The Motion Picture (1996 Version) [Enhanced CD] (Audio CD)
I was eight when "Romeo and Juliet" came out (I decided to write a kids review for the hell of it)and yes, I fell in love with leo and I still am. I thought the film was brilliant, with a wonderful performance by claire danes and after seeing it, I heard there was a soundtrack. A friend bought it for me after i said how great the movie was and I instantly was hooked. Although I did not fully understand the songs then, I understand them now and it still remains one of the best soundtracks and films i have ever seen. Here is the breakdown:
*#1 Crush - Garbage (they are one of my favorite bands and this song is GREAT 5/5)
Local God - Very good song to rock to. Upbeat and fun. 4/5
Angel - Ok song, able to listen to but not as great as the others. 3/5
Pretty Piece of Flesh - Great upbeat rocking rhythme. Fun to listen to! 4/5
Dream - Pretty good song, but the lead singer tends to bug me. 3.5/5
Kissing You - wonderful love song! Made me cry in the movie! 5/5
Lovefool - Fun, perky pop song. 4/5
Young Hearts Run Free - Fun song but not amazing. 3/5
Everybody's Free- Nice Gospel song. 4/5
*To You I Bestowe - I love this song! Great guitar song with wonderful beat 5/5
*Talk Show Host - Also one of my favorite songs! 5/5
Little Star - Can't listen to this song. Awful. 1/5
*You and Me Song - Great upbeat song! Love it! 5/5

*= favorite songs even though most songs are GREAT!
Get this great collection, you won't be disappointed!
I also suggest the special edition DVD, it is great!

4.0 out of 5 stars Romeo & Juliet, June 9, 2005

This review is from: William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet: Music From The Motion Picture (1996 Version) [Enhanced CD] (Audio CD)
The official soundtrack for the movie and here you can feel the movie's emotional twist without the visuals. The climax of the album and the movie for that matter, is Des'ree's "Kissing You (Love Theme from Romeo + Juliet)". Quindon Tarver gives us emotions with rich vocals on the accapella "Everybody's Free (To Feel Good)" as he's accompanied by a choral utopia. As the hard rock does just that there's also disco/70's sounds with titles like "Young Hearts Run Free" by Kym Mazelle. As this gets you prepaired for the dancefloor titles like "Pretty Piece Of Flesh" by One Inch Punch feels as if it a part of a S&M experience with a little hint of violence. Not quite a classic, but it's very damn close to being more than a classic, more like an antique.
