William Stringfellow (1928-1985) was a unique figure in theology and law. One of the few American theologians of whom Karl Barth and Jacques Ellul spoke and related to with affirmation and affection, Stringfellow did theology 'underground', in the shadows, amongst the marginalised, with the disaffected. Consequently, whilst highly regarded by many acclaimed theologians of his day, he has remained on the margins of the theological academy.
