Art Songs Come to Life,
By Joan Rogers "hautcontre" (Portland, OR United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Williams: Songs of Travel / Butterworth: A Shropshire Lad (Audio CD)
Anthony Rolfe-Johnson seems born to sing these songs -- each of them might have been written for his small, perfectly-balanced tenor voice. %Rolfe-Johnson maintains seamless, soaring lyric lines while declaiming the text with intelligence and feeling. The Butterworth song "Lads-love" is a particularly fine example of expressive singing beautifully enhanced by a creamy, silvery timbre which is characteristic of the voice with intimate pieces such as these. Don't miss it!
