This review is from: Williamsburg Before and After: The Rebirth of Virginia's Colonial Capital (Hardcover)
I have checked this book out at the library looking for 'GOOD' photos of some of the older homes and the resconstructed homes from the 1700's. The photos are absolutely breathtakingly crystal, clear, show wonderful asthetic views, and give a simple and linear time frame of ownership and construction/demolition, reconstruction of many of the homes in the Williamsburg area. This book is worth every penny if you buy it for research and historical purposes. Of all the books on Williamsburg that I have ever read (dozens and dozens), this one is the most excellent!

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book--you won't regret it!, August 5, 2007
This review is from: Williamsburg Before and After: The Rebirth of Virginia's Colonial Capital (Hardcover)
As a big fan of Colonial Williamsburg, I purchased this book years ago. The story of the restoration is really interesting. The beautiful photographs capture the essence of the story--so it's a nice "coffee table" book as well as an engaging read.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Must Have" for Colonial Williamsburg fans, April 22, 2009
This review is from: Williamsburg Before and After: The Rebirth of Virginia's Colonial Capital (Hardcover)
I have little to add that won't repeat what other reviews have already said. Great photos, fascinating history of the restoration and a wonderful way to prepare for your next visit. The text alone would make a great audio tour guide (author/publisher, are you listening?)

5.0 out of 5 stars Williamsburg Alive, December 10, 2010

This review is from: Williamsburg Before and After: The Rebirth of Virginia's Colonial Capital (Hardcover)
This book gives the history of Williamsburg from its beginnings as a bustling colonial town to its rebirth as a national treasure. In the beginning of its history it was full of dynamic people and business and it was here that the first college was founded, William and Mary. And to this center of higher learning came many of our founding fathers to finish their education and study law, including Thomas Jefferson.
But, when the capital was moved to Richmond, Williamsburg began a slow decline and slide into decay. The lovely old homes were becoming more and more run down and the town itself seemed to be soon forgotten. Then a clergyman, Dr. William Goodwin, who appreciated our heritage, began his struggle to find a mentor for Williamsburg. He found what he was seeking in the person of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Together they began the slow and painstaking restoration of Williamsburg, one building at a time. What they saved through their efforts is beyond estimation for they saved our very core as a nation.
The book is full of beautiful pictures and wonderful details that should never be forgotten. This is a book that should have a place in the library of every person who appreciates our wonderful heritage.

The book was as described. I was notified that it was mailed on 4/6. However, I did not receive the book until 4/22. I can't imagine what took USPS that long.
