I wanted my grandchildren, ages 8 and 9, to get the most out of our trip to Williamsburg. I ordered several books on Jefferson, Washington, Jamestown, and Williamsburg. The Williamsburg book not only informs on the founding and early days of the city, but also covers the restoration which was begun in the 1930's. Very interesting and informative.

This slim volume is a nicely written and illustrated overview of Williamsburg's history from beginning to end as a colonial capital -- and as it is now -- reborn as America's premier living history museum. Young readers will enjoy learning of the city's restoration, due to the efforts of Reverend W. A. R. Goodwin, Rector of the Bruton Parish Church and John D. Rockefeller, Jr.
Thomas Jefferson, the second governor to be elected in Virginia, stated that Williamsburg is "the finest school of manners and morals in America." There is much to be learned there today, and Zachary Kent's book illustrates that well. Recommended. |
