Book Description

February 22, 2002
After stabbing a defenseless gas attendant 19 times during a robbery, Willie Horton was arrested and sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole. Eleven years later Horton was given a "weekend pass" from prison, and his unexpected freedom resulted in another sadistic rampage. Did the liberal governor of Massachusetts lose his bid to become president because of his support for this supposedly rehabilitative furlough program for first-degree murderers? This fast-paced book explores this question, as well as Horton's crimes, arrests, trials, and the furlough program that became a pivotal issue during the 1988 presdential election. The book also explores the different campaign ads used during the election, such as the " Revolving Door Ad," Horton's mug shot in the "Weekend Passes" ad, and the Dukakis in the " Tank Ad." The author, a police lieutenant from Horton's former hometown, offers a unique perspective of the events.

Editorial Reviews

Review

" Willie Horton: True Crime"-is worth the read. It grabs the reader's attention with Takesian's crisp, police-beat writing. -- The Eagle Tribune, September 29, 2002

From the Publisher

A great mix involving true-crime and the political strategies and errors that engulfed the 1988 presidential election. In a clear and concise manner, the author, a police lieutenant, objectively presents the facts associated with Horton' crimes, as well as his use as a political pawn. Unlike most books which contain political content, the book is devoid of opinions. Readers will also be exposed to certain dark, but sometimes amusing aspects of urban police work.

4.0 out of 5 stars What happens when liberals run amok, November 21, 2002

This review is from: Willie Horton: True Crime and its Influence on a Presidential Election (Paperback)
This tome explores the Willie Horton fiasco and its impact on the Michael Dukakis campaign in 1988. Ancient history? Not really. The leading contender for the Democratic nomination for president in 2004 is Senator John Kerry, who also happened to be Michael Dukakis' Lt. Governor.
