Review

People think they know Bill Cunningham from Cincinnati s 700 WLW. As is normally the case, this is only part of the story of radio s Great American. Successful radio personalities have depth of knowledge and a keen understanding of an audience. Willie s life experience gives him the foundation for his success. Cunningham has twice been honored with a Marconi Award from the National Association of Broadcasters, the most coveted peer recognition in the radio industry. But, as Willie has been known to say, I'm not sure if you know this, but half the people hate me! After reading the story of the real Bill Cunningham, chances are you ll start to like him much more. Bill Cunningham is heard weekdays from Noon - 3:00 P.M. on 700 WLW in Cincinnati, and Sunday nights on the premiere radio networks. --Darryl Parks, Program Director 700 WLW

I have known Bill Cunningham many years, having first met in Atlanta as we both worked in talk radio ... we have been buddies ever since and have only grown closer as the years roll by. Yes, it's true, I did borrow from Bill, You're a Great American. And, he does ask me about the royalties every time I see him. --Sean Hannity

Willie's stories are great and could have made for a great book. However, the writing style of the author is poor and makes for an awkward read. Also, there are typos everywhere making the book seem amateurish.

The author gets sidetracked from the story a lot and has disjointed thoughts put to paper. A picture caption identifies The Trucking Bozo as The Trucking Boyz. Historical background is given when none is needed and it is given incorrectly. For instance, The Three Stooges may be referenced without having to tell us who they were. However, if you didn't know who they were you still don't because according to the author Larry Fine was not one of The Three Stooges.

If this is supposed to be an authoritative biography and history of Cunningham's career then it falls short. A couple of examples include pictures within the book showing him ruling on his throne as Ra, the Egyptian Sun God, but I don't remember reading anything in the book about that long-running bit. Also, in the late-eighties-under the Fairness Doctrine-Willie provided the opposing viewpoint for WDTN TV's general manager commentary. This is the way I first knew him and he used to drive my later mother crazy, but no mention in the book about his time as the opposing view.

Willie says that he was going to write a tome about conservatism until he read Mark Levin's book and now feels that he has nothing to add to that great work. The same cannot be said by someone thinking about writing the story of William Cunningham and considering this offering.

If you're a fan I still recommend it. There are some very entertaining stories with a high-level of candidacy. I laughed quite a few times and have a better appreciation for the man behind the voice of the common man.

This book is very poorly written. Its a shame Mr. Cunningham didn't hire a professional writer to tell his story. Numerous spelling and grammatical errors as well as factual errors makes this book very hard to get through. The author, editor and publisher should be embarrassed.

I've enjoyed listening to Bill Cunningham for years on the radio and this book was a great read. The book reads quickly, colorfully descriptive manner, you can hear Bill speaking as you're reading it. Eric Deters writes candidly and holds nothing back. There is a good dose of humor spread throughout the book. I loved this book!

The Great American is truly a Great Story of a GREAT AMERICAN. I inherited from my father an appreciation for Bill Cunningham's Passion and Wit!!! My father would always listen to him intently...either laughingly, or even sometimes in disagreement. But Always with Great Appreciation and Respect. Being a Veteran of the US Navy...I also appreciate Bill's (and Eric's) respectful attention towards Patriotism and Passion to take hold of the truth and tackle issues that inspire people! So Glad Publishers were wise enough to get this to the MASSES!!! THANK YOU
