It's has been very difficult trying to find books for my twin 8yr old daughters.
I wanted a series of books with the star character being an African American girl just having fun and doing kid stuff. A book that will make them know that reading is fun. This book does just that and more. I only wish that there were more of them because I already bought them all. If you're looking for a great chapter book for an African American girl, then author Valerie Wilson Wesley's series of "Willimena Rules" is it. Also try, Gloria Rising and Gloria's Way by Ann Cameron.

I bought this book for my daughter and she said she really enjoyed it. She sometimes struggle with reading, but the wording in this book was not difficult for her and she was able to read it on her own. She finished it in about 3 days because she couldn't put it down.

My daughter and I can't stop re-reading the books from this entire series. Willie is a kids, kid. A mixture of sass, insecurity, and sweetness. I was looking for a character who my daughter could identify with that also looks like her. It's important to me that she has heroes who African American too. Like the other reviewer my only wish would be for more books!

No parent, or child for that matter, likes to deal with bullies. But this book had a very good ending on how Willemenia dealt with the class bully. Surprise but happy ending. Our daughter learned a valuable lesson about returning good for evil in this story.

I thought this book was extremely touching. The book really does see things through the eyes of a child. This makes it easier for kids to ask questions about serious subjects and consider the possible repercussions of their actions.
I purchased the entire set for my niece and she absolutely loved them. I gave them to her one by one and she has read them and shared them with her classmates and several parents have inquired as to where they came from and how they could get a set. I found both boys and girls find them interesting.

When I saw this book prior to purchasing it, I thought it was going to be a fun, playful, clearly made up storybook. Instead, its a common, regular day-to-day story that does a nice job of addressing a serious subject, bullying. Willimena is a young girl returning to school and having to deal with "Mean Irene" the bully, and although told from a young girls perspective, it is told as a serious concern for parents and an informative piece for providing youth with the correct way to handle a bully.
I think parents should read this book to their child or along with their child. The issues covered are very important. Willimena tried very much on her own to solve the problem of Mean Irene taunting, teasing, and threatening her. Mean Irene started the bullying on the very first day of school! It's a good read, and should be read to young students in class as well. |
