Book Description

For the past couple years Laurel’s been coasting, hiding in the backseat while her life drifts off course. Then one summer afternoon a tall, built bruiser named Flynn strides in and steers her straight into an infatuation she never saw coming.Flynn introduces Laurel to things she’s never imagined—to the violent but exciting realm of the underground boxing circuit, to rough sex and even rougher role-playing, and to an attraction she craves even as it intimidates her. As Flynn invites her deeper into his world and his life, Laurel has to make a choice—let fear keep her holed up where it’s safe, or take a chance and fight for the man who makes her feel more alive than she’d dreamed possible.Reader Advisory: Although all sex acts are 100-percent consensual, Willing Victim contains role-playing scenarios that may upset some readers who are sensitive about rape, even in a simulated capacity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sensitive take on dark subject matter October 1, 2010
By Ridley
Format:Kindle Edition
I bought this book for two reasons: 1. It's set in Boston and written by a local. 2. The characters act out rape fantasies.
It met my expectations completely on both accounts. Boston was a living, breathing character and the rape scenes were deliciously dark and satisfying.

Laurel White is nearly thirty but she's spinning her wheels working as a waitress at a tourist trap. She hasn't been able to make a relationship work long-term and she's stuck living with two roommates in a small apartment in the North End. When she sees a bruiser of a construction worker break up an escalating lovers' spat at a downtown park, she's immediately drawn to him, following after him to ask him on a date. He initially turns her down, but when she presses him, he writes an address on a napkin and hands it to her:

"'Friday and Saturday nights, eight to one. Tell the guy working that Flynn invited you...If that doesn't scare you off,' he said, 'you can try askin' me out again.'"

As it turns out, Flynn has invited her to one of his boxing matches - held in the basement of a South Boston dive bar - and to meet Pam, the woman he has rough sex with. Before he gets involved with her, he's letting her know just what sort of beast she's poking at. When Pam invites Laurel to watch her and Flynn "scratch each other's kinky itches," that night, Laurel agrees to go, intrigued despite herself.

Laurel and Flynn then forge a "friends with benefits" sort of arrangement where she explores a hitherto unknown part of herself that is unspeakably turned on by rape fantasy.

The book is in third person, but told exclusively from the heroine's point of view.

4.0 out of 5 stars Catnip for fans of alpha males and rough fun. June 24, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I purchased this because I saw a lot of people liked it and I was, frankly, looking for an erotic romance with intelligent characters, dirty talk, and rough sex. Yeah, I said it. :)

Flynn is a boxer and spends his Fridays and Saturdays in a Fight Club scenario. He's a good guy, but he does like to play out non-consensual or rough roleplays. There's a safe word and rules, but once it starts he's committed. Afterwords, he'll drive you home or let you stay over. Laurel finds this all out and doesn't think it's her thing -- and then she changes her mind. Being an erotic romance, things end well for them.

It was a good read. The talk was explicit, the roleplays were sexy. Toward the end, with only slight hints of it before, we deal with some of Laurel's baggage and that slowed things down a little. I read a lot of books where people have issues and they deal with them, I do it happily, but in Erotic Romance I really want to keep it simple. This stuff tends to change the whole tone and suddenly the book you bought for the explicit stuff goes all sensitive. Maybe because the writer things the reader needs to know that the hero can make sweet, sweet love to the heroine, too -- maybe lots of readers do need that. ::shrug:: It was already clear though that the hero was a good guy. The heroine knows that, because she made him chicken pot pie. (This is in no way a weird euphemism.)

4 stars for what it is and what it's meant to be, and because there are not enough books like it in the genre -- where people are sane, but with truly wild imaginations and a taste for uncompromising roleplay.

Price has nothing to do with how I rate a book, but I will take a moment to comment that these books are getting crazy expensive. Insane. Especially for the shorter works out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars The wrong kind of magical can be so right February 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the first book I've read where the characters actively talk about the rape or forced sex fantasy. Usually in these Dom-rom books, they don't go that far. The sex depicted can be rough and dominating and controlling but never to the point of what Flynn does. However, everything Flynn does is with Laurel's consent and he is always aware of what she wants and needs from him.

The sex is rough and sometimes a little violent, often including slapping (her hitting him as she fights) and also spitting in the face (her again at him). Flynn's kink is the power play during sex, holding a woman down, pinning her with his strength, directing and ordering her what to do to him, forcing her. All of this often leads to the rape scenario roleplay, the one where she's told to do what he says or she'll get hurt. 'Scream and I swear I'll kill you.' And Laurel loves this type of fantasy.

As I'm reading it, I'm thinking about how gritty he is, how darkly intense, how implacable and intimidating in expression and body. Just bad-boy yummy. He's so brutish, almost barbarian in how alpha he is. Flynn is primal, in-your-face mean and tough; he's a bruiser, a brutish fighter and an aggressive, domineering lover. His rough kinks totally turned me on; it's so very erotic and hot. I can't tell you how hot- his bold actions, his dominating attitude, his nasty words.

Flynn also has his sweet, tender moments. He's more than that tough guy who likes it rough. I think the story is amazing. And I loved Flynn, whatever that says about me. Flynn is no Prince Charming; he's no smooth talker. He's definitely not the hearts and flowers type but he is one of a kind. The heroine Laurel thinks about Flynn: 'You are some f****d-up kind of magical.' And that he is - a hard, gritty kind of magical, made from dark, secret desires. Loved it! This is an awesome book.

I thought this was a really good book. Well written with many steamy sex scenes. But this is a very "taboo" subject that may offend some readers. Read more

I guess Willing Victim is classified as erotica; more sex than story. It is however also a short and sweet romance with a HEA. Read more
