Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4 A romantic and beautifully illustrated fairy tale picture book. On a showery Midsummer Night's Eve, a young woman named Lisane welcomes Denis to the Whispering Woods and tells him that the people feasting there are the Willow people, who live as trees except for two nights a year. He agrees to return to wed Lisane on the night of the harvest moon, even though she can live with him only during the fall and winter months. The two live happily through the winter but, as spring comes, Denis finds he cannot bear to let Lisane leave. He resolves to cut down her tree but changes his mind when he realizes that he could kill Lisane as well and that he must let her return to her people. The story is a well-crafted combination of dialogue and description which can be read aloud. Using watercolor washes, gouache and colored pencils in soft greens and blues, Gal has created an enchanted forest filled with gravely handsome people in medieval costumes and delicately drawn animals and birds. The illustrations possess the elegance and grace of his artwork for Janet Lunn's version of The Twelve Dancing Princesses (Methuen, 1980; o.p.) and are a perfect accompaniment to the text. Jean Hammond Zimmerman, Willett School Library, South River, N.J.
