When Willow speaks, her words slip out as soft and shy as a secret. At school, her barely audible whisper causes her no end of troubles. But Willow is as resourceful as she is quiet, and she fashions a magic microphone from items she finds in the recycling bin.

But Willow s clever invention is only a temporary solution. How will this quiet little girl make herself heard?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1—Willow speaks in whispers so low that no one can hear her. She wants to speak louder, but she just can't, so everyone ignores her. Her father tells her that a big voice is stuck inside her, and will one day come out. Then she gets an idea. She makes a magic megaphone from recycled items and presses it to her lips; her voice comes out loud and strong. All day her classmates and teacher hear her and include her in their activities. But at the end of the day, she drops the megaphone and it breaks. Wanting to be heard, she speaks out in her own strong voice. Everyone cheers. Simple cartoon illustrations capture the child's emotions as she struggles to be heard. Crisp lines with added color on a white background provide an overall sense of unity and balance to the story. Limited text and simple sentences, combined with a strong character who solves her own problems, make this a successful selection.—Margaret R. Tassia, Millersville University, PA

From Booklist

Willow is shy—so shy that she never speaks up. When kids at school ask if she wants to sit with them, her answer is unheard. She gets the wrong kind of juice because the teacher doesn’t hear her say “apple.” The book does a marvelous job of showing Willow’s responses, which appear in tiny type. Willow’s father understands her shyness and tells her someday she’ll find her voice. That makes Willow think about using louder words. The next day she comes to school with a “magic microphone,” a cardboard tube decorated with glitter. When she is asked what kind of juice she wants, she uses it to say “apple,” and the teacher hears her. Then the microphone breaks, and Willow’s worried. But something is bubbling up inside her, which turns out to be “her own big, strong voice.” Kids both shy and otherwise will recognize Willow’s situation and appreciate the resolution. Adding a jaunty note are Howells’ sprightly black-ink and candy-colored illustrations on crisp white paper that present a happy group of fellow classmates. Preschool-Grade 1. --Ilene Cooper

5.0 out of 5 stars Review from Books That Heal Kids April 5, 2011
Format:Hardcover
As an elementary school counselor, I get a lot of requests from parents, teachers, blog followers etc asking for book suggestions to help kids overcome shyness. There's not a lot of good ones out there on the topic. But there is a really GREAT one out there.....Willow's Whispers. This was a discovery a couple of months ago. As I started to read the first pages, it almost seemed too good to be true - because I love the way it's written from beginning to end.

This was a powerful read for the shy kids and even the ones who are not. First of all, the shy kids got to hear DIRECTLY from me in the most validating way through Willow's story. I introduced the words...fears, confidence, inner strength, brave.....oh the list goes on. Also, it's okay to be shy. But when can our shyness get in the way of our own happiness and become a problem? This is what happens to Willow....she is misheard, gets bullied, has trouble making friends, and misses out on classroom opportunities. We quickly figured out her shyness was getting in the way. Good Stuff! And a wonderful way to introduced strategies for kids to practice.

For those kids who are not shy it was a good lesson in sensitivity and to be supportive to those children who do feel shy at times. Reach out to them, have understanding, and try to help them feel comfortable. I cannot wait to read this one again next year. This is always a sign of how much I adore a new book. My recommendation list just got a lot stronger in the shy department.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for shy children February 27, 2013

A a teacher, I come across many children who have yet to find their voice. I loved that this story gave Willow the confidence by receiving positive reinforcement through the use of her magic microphone, and then through using her own, assertive voice.

Nice simple text. easy read to children to explain how one can find courage to speak up and what the results can be when one uses their own voice or is assertive.
