"Martela explains the nuts and bolts of willpower, offers easy to follow instructions on how to work it, and in the end, presents you with a challenge you can't say no to. … I think one of the best compliments is that this 50+ page book inspired me to get cracking with certain goals of my own."
- Emilia Lahti, MSSc, MAPP, researcher and a lecturer on determination and resilience

Why is Barack Obama only wearing gray or blue suits? Why did Stanley, while searching for Doctor Livingstone in the darkest Africa and haunted by malaria, mosquitoes, diseases, and beasts, still insist on shaving every single morning?

  • The Zorro Circle

These tools are not only practical and easy to put in use. They are also backed up by the latest advances in science. The book is easy to approach, but contains a wealth of information about how the human mind and brain work. Rich with stories and personal experiences of the author, it provides a highly accessible, yet scientifically accurate, take on willpower – the most important tool you have for doing the right thing.

"[The book] offers practical solid advice with many illustrations of experiments to validate the claims. … I highly recommend that you not only read this book but study it and keep it handy for follow ups and reminders to keep striving forward to a more successful life and better choices."
- John Wilder, marriage coach

5.0 out of 5 stars A concise little manual full of goodies October 11, 2013
By Mark
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have read the works of Roy Baumeister, Kelly McGonigal and others on the subject of willpower, so I'm no stranger to the topic. And I'd say Dr Martela compares quite nicely. In his little booklet Dr Martela puts together a simple, understandable framework for willpower and its limitations, but most importantly does it without losing practicality. While your typical psychological self-help manual usually meanders from a funny anecdote to another to entertain the easily distracted reader, most of the actual substance could be distilled into short pamphlets like this. Dr Martela instead cuts to the chase. So if you want the beef and nothing else, this is your book.

The 12 tools presented are research-based, practical tips for understanding and using the willpower correctly. As far as I have tested them, they seem to work quite nicely, for fun and benefit. Only drawback I can come up with is that Martela doesn't facilitate (or should I say, pamper) the reader too much - he seems to assume the reader is an adult person that can use his/her imagination and judgment in order to put the tools into use. But that's not really a drawback, is it?

In short: a good, easy read and solid stuff. Cheap as hell. Well spent coupla bucks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great practical guide December 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Willpower: The Owner's Manual is a well written guide that contains simple tools that help you change your life for better. I liked how all the observations made in the book were backed by hard science, that gives them credibility.

For most people, many of the tools can sound familiar already. Nevertheless, while we might already know in theory we should do certain things, in practice we often fail to do so. Reading this book might actually convert the theory into actions. This book is not about amazing new findings, but instead simply a useful recap that collects essential learnings from willpower science in a pleasant, easy to read package.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! January 19, 2014
By Olivier
Format:Paperback
This is a great book. I found it at the same time very useful to manage one’s life, but also very interesting from a scientific point of view: the advice provided are very useful, the scientific evidence quoted is very interesting.
Moreover the book is very well written, very agreeable to read.
Waiting for the next book from Frank Martela.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Concise Manual to Help you achieve your goals October 12, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a rare book that is based in sound research complete with a lengthy bibliography.

It helps you to make better more informed choices and to achieve the success that we all desire. It offers practical solid advice with many illustrations of experiments to validate the claims.

It fits in with my philosophical choice of behavioral psychology, the only scientifically quantifiable school of psychology.

I highly recommend that you not only read this book but study it and keep it handy for
follow ups and reminders to keep striving forward to a more successful life and better choices.

Kudos sir, well done.

1.0 out of 5 stars thought it would be better August 29, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I had high hopes for this book to give useful practical tips.
I found the 12 tips provided so basic and common sense...
They can be found in any article on the net.
The whole book can be summarized in a one A4 page.

I strongly suggest "the will power instinct" book.
Deep, with a fresh perspective on the topic.

No matter how badly you want something and how motivated you are, sometimes it still isn't easy to carry out every necessary step towards your goal. This book provides entertaining and easy to understand advice for those situations.

In the book the ability to use willpower and choose the long-term advantage over momentary short-term urges is identified as one of the main reasons for success in any field. Very useful, and in many real-life situations neglected, are the ideas on how to take care of your physical condition, company and environment in order to get things done. Martela points out that "humans tend to lose half of the battles of willpower" and "the best way to use your limited willpower resources is to change the situation so that you do not actually need willpower at all to do the right thing." In my opinion the book could have more on tool 12, how to recruit your own support group and utilize their encouragement and advice.

The book is a great & useful quick read, and has ideas and questions for implementing the tips given.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scientifically valid, practically sound October 11, 2013
By Lauri
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a book that works both in giving the interested reader an update of the most recent research, as well as practical tools to address the question of willpower.

While the space in which the book operates is filled with quite a few books based on not much more than wishful thinking, the Willpower Manual has a solid backing in scientific fact. While a short read, it should work both as a quick introduction to the topic, a grounds for further reading, as well as a practical guide in how to implement these findings in everyday life.

Highly recommended!

After reading almost half of the book I come here searching for more books by Frank Martela.

I am familiar with many publications about will power and self discipline and this one is a gem: short, focused, concise, with practical exercises.

Frank, thank you, and please write more, I'll buy and read all.
