Editorial Reviews

The late Willy DeVille was a colorful and charismatic character whose career saw incredible highs and lows. This CD is the result of a low period of his life that eventually resulted in the recording of some unforgettable music and the release of two of his most in-demand albums.

In 1988 Willy's stock had fallen so low in the States that he couldn't get a record deal. He retired to New Orleans to regroup and in 1990 recorded the Victory Mixture album with Allen Toussaint, Dr John, Eddie Bo and the Meters. This was issued in Europe on the independent Sky Ranch label and sold a very creditable 200,000 copies.

In 1993 Willy toured with his band and Dr John, Johnny Adams and the Wild Magnolias as part of the New Orleans Revue. An album, Big Easy Fantasy was issued, containing several live New Orleans-themed songs and some tracks from Victory Mixture that had been remixed with added vocals or instrumentation.

Willy DeVille In New Orleans contains all the tracks from Victory Mixture and Big Easy Fantasy but we have only included the remixed versions of the duplicated tracks.

Notes by respected journalist and fan, Garth Cartwright include new interviews with producers Carlo Ditta and Philippe Rault, plus several of the musicians involved.

It's always mystified me why Willy DeVille wasn't as big as Springsteen in his native USA. While that wasn't the case in Europe, mainstream success seemed to elude him here. He had it all. Class, charm, style...A voice that was at home on any genre from Punk to R & B ...Write signature tunes like Cadallic Walk and rip your heart out with a nostalgic ballad ...His long list of collaborators includes Doc Pomus, Jack Nietsche, Allen Toussaint and Dr. John. Admirers include the likes of Tom Waits. What's not to love?

It wasn't because of his drug problems. Plenty of junkies have hit the big time. Perhaps it was simply that from his Mink days on, he was in a class all his own. His West Side Story blend of Punk/Do Wop/Latin/Rhythm & Blues out of step with times and trends.

Despite an Oscar nod for his song in Princess Bride, 1988 was a low point for DeVille. He had alienated his core audience, couldn't get a record deal and his heroin addiction was spiraling out of control. In 1990 he left New York for New Orleans. Lord knows why he chose America's most notorious party town to get his head clear, but the gamble paid off.

This compilation consists of the entirety of the now out of print Victory Mixture along with the odds and ends, Big Easy Fantasy. Featuring a legendary line up of New Orleans' finest, including Dr. John, Allen Toussaint and Eddie Bo, both albums became two of DeVille's best selling albums...In Europe...

Almost exclusively covers, DeVille dusts off a few obscurities like Toussaint's regional hit, Hello My Lover. Not to say he doesn't pay homage with Crescent City anthems like Who Shot the La La and Iko Iko. The sole DeVille original is Just Off Decatur Street, an ode to an imaginary street musician.

I have to confess right off that this is not an unbiased or professional review. I am an insatiable give-me-more Willy DeVille fan, so this is simply my thoughts on this album, which I believe is destined to be at least my second-favourite of all time ("Live in Berlin" might beat it out in the long run).

If I were to write a really, really short review, I'd have to just say, "Get this album!", but I'll try to explain a little. I was contemplating buying "Victory Mixture" and lamenting the scarcity of "Big Easy Fantasy", and suddenly there was "In New Orleans", a compilation of the two! It's road music, dance music, feed-my-soul music -- doesn't seem to matter what mood I'm in, this album fits it. As always, if Willy does a cover, he does it at least as well as anyone I've heard. And when he writes a song reminiscent of someone else's, it's okay because it's still all his own. This album treats us, as did "Le Chat Bleu", to two versions of several songs, and again I find that I prefer the live versions -- that's not something that happens with most artists. He must have been something to see in person!

Don't miss the liner notes. Willy's is a story of a life lived hard and of never quitting. He was an amazing performer, whether in the depths or on top. I wish he could have stayed with us.

So you missed out on Willy Deville while he lived, so did he. A great Talent, the late great Willy Deville was largely unknown. More's the pity. Someday, the movie of Willy Deville's life will win Oscars and Grammy Awards. Alive, Willy was not so lucky. But, as a performer and showman, his albums live on. So, make up for missed opportunity, sample this album and buy it. Willy was an artist and musician. He surrounded himself with great musicians. Leave the mediocrity of modernity behind; listen to the gypsy soul of Willy in New Orleans and every other place he played.

Willy was honest to his craft; and, music and musicianship are better for it. Willy is the opposite of all the teenybopper-TV-talent-show over produced karaoke-type productions that dominate our culture. Willy is music for men and women. Hardcore Willy Deville, ear candy for adults and true sophisticates. Posers need not apply.
