Editorial Reviews

From Kirkus Reviews

In the ``American Indian Stories'' series, an easily read summary of the life and work of the first woman to be elected Principal Chief of the Cherokees, an office she still holds. Born in Oklahoma in 1945, Mankiller lived in California from 1957, when her family moved there because of a severe drought, until 1976; she became active in the American Indian Rights movement with the 1969 occupation of Alcatraz. Mankiller is a much-honored achiever who has apparently survived several personal challenges with grace (divorce, a serious accident, myasthenia gravis); not much of her personality is evident in this perfunctory laudatory account, but in the absence of other biographies it's adequate as far as it goes. Still's watercolor illustrations are clumsy and garish, but also, occasionally, quite evocative. Summary of dates; no index. (Biography/Picture book. 7-12) -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP.
