The return of The Duke.
Wellington "The Duke" Mara passed away in October, 2005 at the age of 89 after dedicating 81 years to the New York Giants as an administrator, owner, and unwavering booster. In 1940, heeding the advice of influential team owners Tim Mara of the New York Giants and George Halas of the Chicago Bears, the NFL selected Wilson as the league's official football supplier. The following year, Wilson introduced a redesigned football and named it "The Duke" in honor of Mara's son, Wellington. The Duke stayed in play for nearly three decades until the NFL and AFL merged in 1969.

These are PERFECT... I buy one a year because we actively use and beat the heck out of ours and always end up needing a new one, not due to lack of quality, but to the extreme amount of use it gets both in our household and even on active tackle football teams that my oldest son plays QB on... once you go up to the real leather official NFL ball, there is no going back... nothing beats it. You can sense the quality in the feel and see the quality in the flight of the ball compared to others. One year I bought one of these and a high quality composite, thinking we would use the composite during bad weather to save the official one... yeah, that never happened, the official one is so much better eventually you just say... the heck with it... and use it even during the bad weather (hence why eventually you want a brand new one again)!

This review is coming from a person who has own composite footballs all their life. When the ball first arrived I though I got some cheap knock off. The ball was pale, dull, colors were all uneven, and slick. I though to myself I should have gotten another composite footballs because a leather football looks like crap. I then followed the care instructions on the box.

To revitalize tacky grip:
-Using a brush & moderate pressure, brush the ball completely
-Using a damp towel, quickly rub the ball completely. Do not saturate the ball with water.
-While the ball is still damp, brush it again to bring tack back the surface of the leather

It is amazing what this did to the ball. I performed these procedures twice and all I can say is WOW!!! It totally transformed the ball completely. The ball is now a reddish brown color. The ball has a nice shine to it. The colors are now all even is very tacky.

Just to note, when you wipe the ball down with a damp towel red dye will come off the ball. I used a paper towel knowing this would happen.

I am very happy that I purchased this ball. Will never get a composite again.

Official Football at a great price. If you've never played with an official football it is very different. If you dream of catching the game winning pass in the NFL it starts here.

Actual gameday football for the NFL. This is my 3rd one. 1st one got too old and bladder went bad. 2nd one got signed by NFL players at training camp (so now its on my shelf). Great football and will last a very long time. My first one was treated pretty rough and got run over a few times, so I am to blame for having to ever have switched to a new football. Would purchase again and again, as I already have!

If you have tossed around the cheap balls before, save your coin and get one of these bad boys. The real leather and quality construction have made this football fan extremely content.

I do wonder what the inflation is supposed to be on it though because it sure feels awful tight.

Whatever you do, don't forget to pick up a ball brush too. A simple brushing will keep the tack going.

I have wanted to own an official NFL ball for a very long time and finally spent the money.

My uncle gave me one when I was a kid and I scuffed it up throwing it on concrete and other tough surfaces. I trashed that ball before I turned 20!

I am now in my early 40's and coach High School ball and am an old Receiver and nothing feels better than the real deal. I keep it in my coaching bag and when I warm up my kids if I get a chance I will get it out and throw with one of them and it is the best.

As a football (keep it on the grass) or as an authentic ball for the fanatic to display this is the real deal and well worth the cash for the leather.

The Wilson NFL football is fantastic. It arrived in new condition. The ball is slick so I will have to buy the Wilson F9907 brush, I have been told it helps and there are instructions on the box when the football arrives.
A must buy for NFL fans.

I don't care about the $89, I just wanted an actual NFL quality ball, which I did not get. I bought two of these pig skins only to return them both. The first arrived with three small holes in the skin, the second was sewn off center. Can you picture Elway having thrown around an off-sewn ball? Neither can I. Either way I recommend purchasing this football only in-store so you can inspect it beforehand. Basically, it seems to be the case that this "Official Game Ball" thing is a scam to sell off the balls that do not pass the NFL quality inspection at Wilson.
