4.0 out of 5 stars Good clubs, wanted 5 iron, November 16, 2010

This review is from: Wilson Profile POWER Complete 2009 Golf Club Set
SYNOPSIS: More bang for your dollar because you get a SW and 5 iron. I'd buy again if I couldn't find a set at a thrift store.

Long review for people who care:
==================================
I played since I was 10, quit in my early 20's. Five years later, made new friends that play, had to buy a set for cheap that I could walk out onto the course and play with. More interested in drinking than scoring, but I do both pretty well.

My criteria was easy...
cost: ~ $200
Included: had to have SW,PW,5 iron.
Bag: Stand bag

"Box" sets are for beginners or broke folk like me. Turns out that people have quit caring about Irons, and now beginner sets all have some sort of Hybrid crap. This is the ONLY set I could find with a 5 iron. I wanted 3&4, but I NEED a 5 off of most tee boxes. Nothing beats a good 5 iron.

I'm a student and get pretty much everything from Amazon, so I'm a Prime member, so shipping was "free". I paid $240.

That's it. I've hit the range about twice a week since I got them 6 weeks ago. I've played 5 rounds with them. I'm back to shooting in the mid 80's (no reason to embellish online I guess). I hate people who write reviews as soon as they take the product out of the box.

QUALITY: Good. I like steel shafted irons with heavy heads. The shaft is really nice, thick, good feel in the hands. Hitting off of mats can wear on your hands a bit. Very good loft because of the weight. Fairly forgiving if you toe or heel the ball. No club can fix a slice or a hook, these included. They are not thin "tour" style irons. You can shape your shot some, but if you were that good, you wouldn't be looking at these clubs, would you?

Woods are nice. There is one of those stupid "hybrids", a 3-4 iron thing. It hits ok, but I mostly use it to retrieve balls from snake territory. I'm sure it is a great club for someone. So there are only 2 true woods, a fairway wood, which is apparently a 3wood, and a driver. They are both stiffer graphite shafts, which is nice. Good feel and flex. Fairway wood is a better club than the driver... it is really nice from tee box or grass. The driver is a good club for sure, but it isn't too forgiving of slices. It isn't the club's fault, it is the operator. Did I mention the 3 wood is NICE? Both woods have an interesting profile, and you tee the ball nice and low. I really like that. You just have to play with it to see. They aren't small and they don't look funky. Hard to explain.

PUTTER: Meh...They tried too hard. Not a very good feel on the face, but it isn't BAD. It won't hurt your game, it just doesn't feel great to hit. Not a detraction from the value.

BAG: Light weight, cheap. Great for walking, good shoulder straps. If you don't like it, get a cart bag and save this one for walking. Decent stand mechanism, zippers are not YKK, so they'll blow eventually. Who cares?

PRODUCTION: No pitting on the club face yet, no signs of production flaws. Grips are pretty nice. Cheap paint on sole and backs, but not sloppy and it isn't flaking or wearing off when I pound the mats. I have a very fast club head speed, and I take a big divot. If these clubs were going to break, I'd be the one to do it.

"POWER PROFILE": What? Marketing mostly. You can't buy talent, so hit the range.
I hit this 5 iron 215 yards. I hit my friend's about 215 yards. His box didn't say "power" anywhere on it when he got them in 1995. PW about 150, every club adds between 10-15 yards if you don't skull it. Just pointing out the nice predictability. Who gives a flying fig how far you hit the ball, when you can always reach for the next club up???

Happy golfing.
