After shopping exhaustively for a Wilton bench vise I happened across this one in an internet search, and was surprised to learn it was for sale at Amazon.

It weighs 50 lbs, a major shipping weight, but shipping was free.

The jaws are held in place with hex screws, and can be reversed. The surface on one side has ridges for gripping; on the other side, the jaws are smoothly machined.

The vise has an unusually deep throat, which is helpful for sheet metal bending, and for aluminum sheet cutting operations. It is a big, big vise, but I find I can readily use it for fine work as well as for heavy stuff.

Picked this vise up for my shop recently from Amazon. My dad had an old Wilton Vise and after probably 40yrs of regular use, still in excellent shape..I thought I'd be brand loyal. This vise is built like a tank and should last generations. Love the locking swivel base.The jaws are reversible and secured w/ hexscrews.(Ridged/serrated on one side/smooth on the other)I have picked up a set of Wilton 21111 5-1/2" Multi-Grip Vise Jaws made of soft polyurethane. Have put those to use already and have avoided scratching up my material..Picked them up from Lowes for around $8. Amazon sells them for around $15. Built in pipe jaws are also replaceable and a very nice feature. The anvil is also nice. It too has been put to use but I'm reluctant to really come down on it with a large hammer.The vise is expensive but you are getting a quality engineered item that should last forever..I ended up getting the Wilton 63185/159V Pedestal Base also from Amazon. This combo is nice. I have a free worktable in my shop and my vise is mounted to the left rear of the table at about waist level.On the pedestal base, the vise can be moved to a different location in my work area if needed.

I ordered this vise from Amazon with FREE shipping. Great deal for a 53lb item. It arrived promptly but there was a small chip on the edge of the anvil. I was afraid it may have affected the integrity of the the anvil. I sent it back and Amazon promptly sent me a new one which arrived in perfect condition. It is a big, solid tool that I'm sure will outlast me. Hats-off to Wilton and Amazon. I'm very impressed with the service and the product.

Well-designed, well-made, massive, incredibly strong, but also smooth and precise. Expensive, but buying quality only hurts once, it repays for years and years.

This vise is a champ. I recently ordered this vise because of Wilton's brand reputation. It has exceeded every expectation I have. If you are going to get a vise, pay the extra money and go for this one.

When I first reviewed this vise, the pictures did not match the vise number (were of a lower cost model), and so I down-graded the offer (not the vise). Since then both the pictures have been corrected, and I was encouraged by that to purchase the vise. It is everything that you would expect in a Wilton and this vise (but not all Wilton vises) is made in the USA, so you support your own job when buying one, and get one of the very best vises available. This is a good price for large large vise. If you are a woodworker with an occasional bit of metal to hold, you should consider the 1745 (also available at a good price here), as being of equal quality and a bit lighter, so you can mount it on a wood base with a runner underneath that can be clamped in a wood vise, and put out of the way when not in use. Unless you have a cutting torch, you not likely to ever damage this vise, which means you have something to leave your children and grand children. Unlike a car or computer, an investment in an excellant hand tool will last far longer than you will (an investment in a computer lasts a few years, and then you can't give it away). Buy this vise and in 20 years you will still have the best vise, plus having years of reliable service.

You pay alot, but IMO, its worth it.

I've broken several Made-In-China 6" vises (stripped or broken screw/nut and even cracked a frame) and in doing so wasted more money than if I would have just bought right the first time.

This thing has been solid as a rock and has already withstood more abuse than my last Chinese vise.

It kinda hurts when you realize you can go to the local big-box and get a similar sized vise for a fraction of the price, but if you use them for anything other than light to moderate work, do yourself a favor and get a good one. If the cost is just too much to handle, look for a similar used unit at local estate/business/farm auctions. You'll still be better off.

One thing I'd like to see improved is the packaging. It came shipped in just the manufacturer's box with absolutely no support and by the time it arrived at my door, it had several large holes in the box and it was completely open on one end (staples, no tape). I wonder how many times UPS dropped the dang thing. Luckily, there wasn't a scratch on it, and the handle wasn't bent like I had seen in another review.

Excellent Product, Top Quality Vise.

I bought 3 vises from China and destroyed all three within a few weeks. The quality just is not there in those products.

If your looking for top quality and a really tough vise then you need not look no further. This is the vise that you are looking for.

The price is more expensive then the Chinese versions, but you get "American Made Quality". This vise will be around for your grand children to use.

Superb all purpose vise for general shop work, whether professional or home owner. Great price too!

Wilton Vises was seeing there ability to take abuse and neglect from every

day use convinced me that in my home work shop,this vise should provide

me a lifetime of service.
