I bought this book to help me out with decorating cakes and cupcakes as a beginner. I have found this book to be an excellent reference for the first time decorator. I ended up buying two different tips that did not come with my cake decorating set, that I have found very useful. I bought the cake curved spatulas, from Amazon,that work very well. I also bought the bench knife, and found a 16" cake lifter, and a 18" cake leveler. I got all these great ideas from this book. I bought other things in the book from Amazon, however, the list goes on too long to keep mentioning everything. Buy the book, great starter outer! Oh yes, I always take a look at all of the good and not so good reviews for every product I purchase from Amazon.com

Easy to use, step by step instructions for the beginner like myself. I was going to pay a lot of money for a class but this worked fine instead - perfect for the do-it-yourself kinda person.

I purchased all three of the Wilton Lesson plans that correspond to the three courses taught by different teachers using the Wilton courses. In my opinion, as an educator, they are excellent plans. I intend to instruct myself using these plans. The books will be kept for future reference. Great price - $4.99 ea.

It took me about 40 minutes to read this lesson plan thoroughly; while it is inexpensive at under five dollars, I still don't know if that is necessarily a good value. As some reviewers have pointed out, much of the book focuses on advertising Wilton products; without all of this the useful material in the book could have been condensed down to a couple of pages. I did like the photographs and the techniques for making different consistencies of buttercream for different uses. I had initially planned on getting the subsequent lesson plans as well, but I don't think it will be worth it. If you have any skill/experience with cake decorating at all, I'd recommend skipping this book.

I bought all 3 wilton lesson plan books , i feel that there should be more pictures to follow as i am self teaching myself i feel that the book do not provide enough material for me i had to look at youtube videos to really know the exact steps of icing a flower. There is simply too much advertisement for wilton but well its their book :) so it should be done that way. I was only hoping that they would provide a recipe for a cake but it wasn't provide .

If you are going to take the Wilton Decorating Basics course (course #1 in a four course series) this book is a must have. The book is designed to accompany the Wilton Decorating Basics Student Kit. The kit contains most of the tools and practice templates called for in the book. There are a lot of pictures and diagrams in the book which help you visualize how your designs should look when finished. There are lists of supplies needed for each of the four projects covered and the instructors seem to follow the book very closely. While I believe you could teach yourself using both the kit and the book, the classes were worth the money to me.
This book could be improved physically. The pages need some kind of laminate covering to protect them from spills. You are likely to have the book close at hand during class or at home and I, of course, managed to spill water and frosting on the interior during my first class. It is also an advertisement for other Wilton products. It has a lot of tips inside and will explain all the Wilton gadgets that will make life easier, but your bank account poorer.
Update: This was not an "Add-On" item when it was first offered.
