5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Pan! Larger than I expected!Serves 16!, October 12, 2010
This review is from: Wilton Dimensions Nonstick 3D Skull Pan (Kitchen)
Awesome Pan! Larger than I expected! Serves 16 and easily releases from the mold. I used a Strawberry filling and the fondant glaze. Turned out Beautiful & Delicious! Cleaned up easily. This would be great for Cinco De Mayo using the "Day of the Dead" Cake recipe from Wilton.

This is a heavy duty pan that works very well. My only complaint is that the two halves round when they bake so when you're ready to put the two pieces together you have to cut them to be flat so they can join and form the right shape of the skull. Cutting off the rounded tops turns out to be a good portion of the cake, which seems wasteful to me. I wonder if they could have made this like the teddy bear pan where you clamp the 2 sides together and put a core in and it bakes into 1 nice shape. Maybe we'll see that in a couple of years, but for now this pan actually does produce a GREAT skull shape. I have used it for not only a creepy skull, but I have also made an Iron Man full mask with it, it's great for any sort of head/face you want to create.

4.0 out of 5 stars baking suggestions?, September 22, 2010
By
This review is from: Wilton Dimensions Nonstick 3D Skull Pan (Kitchen)
I found this at Michael's since Amazon was out of stock. I used a 40% off coupon and paid $21 (pre-tax) for the mold. The mold is well made and heavy duty. It came with a pumpkin spice recipe that called for 65-75 minutes of baking at 325 degrees. I would have liked some suggested baking times for other types of cakes. I made a red velvet cake and instead of the 30 minutes at 350 that my recipe called for, I used the pumpkin cake's baking temp of 325 for 65 minutes. It turned out beautifully, but a bit on the dry side. I may try it for 60 minutes next time to see if that helps any. I made a glaze to pour over, but had trouble making it look good. Glaze suggestions would have been lovely too. I used regular Pam to grease, rather than the floured spray they suggest. My cake turned out shiny and very cool looking! This is supposed to serve twelve, but the skull is a bit smaller than I thought it would be...maybe 8 good sized pieces? I am only giving 4 stars because some helpful hints would have been appreciated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big hit!, November 25, 2011

I made this with fondant for my son's birthday. It was a huge hit! Then I made it with frosting/powdered sugar for our office Halloween party. People did not believe it was a cake. Easy to make and can be decorated in many different ways.

This pan rocks! I agree with the reviewer who found it bigger than expected. I can fit my whole face in it -actual human skull size! I already love Wilton products; this one of their best. I went for the Zombie effect, half skull, half rotting flesh with brains oozing out and cut a gummy candy nose in half, and threw an ear down by the severed neck. I used a paint brush to blend the sides and remove icing from teeth, I then painted the teeth black, brown and gold icing with the brush. After letting the red side dry about 10 minutes, I dragged a stiffer brush over the red side in patterns of actual face muscles.MUAHHhaha(see pic above). All I had was a camera phone. Was much cooler in person. I made this cake for a local restaurant owner(who happens to be a winning CBS Blue Plate chef). I wore my outfit from the Zombie walk our team did earlier that day. It was a busy Sat. night and jaws dropped when I walked in carrying the skull on a platter and my own faux rotting face. Perfect timing-Chef H. was just walking up front. He looked the cake and then at me,and eyes wide, put his hands up to his mouth, and gasped(in his Louisiana accent) "AH LUVVVE YOU" LOL LOVE this beautifully detailed pan! Like other reviewer, I am going to make a Santa head for Christmas, Leprechaun for Patty's Day etc! Also agree that they should provide more instructions for cakes OTHER than their pumpkin spice cake...which I'm sure is lovely, but most people just want to throw together a mix and I'm not buying their ad laden Yearbook to get the info. I mixed chocolate and strawberry cake mixes and used homemade vanilla almond icing. Be sure to use "no taste" red. I made little pumpkin cupcakes with leftover batter, then covered then with a #5 tip whorls and made mini brains to go with my Zombie head. Yes my designs and photos are copyrighted under my design company, so please be fair! I got this new with combined with other Halloween items for free shipping off Amazon. Hmmm wondering if I can make a Matthew Mconaughey head for Valentines- mwah, mwah, mwah. LOL!

5.0 out of 5 stars great piece, November 7, 2011

The delivery was really quick, but what was really impressive was how well this worked. It picked up the cake mix very well and the cake came out easily. It's pretty easy to clean by hand, but it doesn't clean well in a dishwasher because of all of the grooves in the mold. If you're looking for something really neat for halloween, this is a good piece

This was the center piece for my Halloween cake it turn out great. It cooks like a bunt cake- One side on this pan takes almost one cake mix made small pumkins with the rest. Had to set my pan on a cookie sheet to get it to set correctly in my oven. Overall, fantastic it really made for a fun cake and was easy to use.

I love this cake mold. I used a regular cake mix and baked at the specified temp for 45 minutes, which is what the box suggested for bundt cakes. It looked so great, I was afraid to ice it, for fear it would ruin the wonderful skull details. I bought a bottle of glaze, but you could just microwave a regular container of icing and pour it over. Still looks very cool. I'm going to make another for a pumpkin-carving party tomorrow and have been joking that I'm going to make skull-shaped cakes for every occasion from now on: with reindeer antlers, decorated with shamrocks, bunny ears, etc. We bought it at Michael's with a 40% off coupon. I think it came to $19 or so.
