5.0 out of 5 stars This is a super-cute, versatile, easy-to-use cake set!, May 30, 2010
This review is from: Wilton Puzzle Cake, Transportation Silicone Puzzle Set (Kitchen)
I bought the Wilton Puzzle Cake Transportation Silicone Cupcake Set a couple of years ago. I saw it in the store, and just thought it was super cute and so versatile. I am a great baker, but not a good cake decorator, so I was excited to find something that looked easy enough that I could actually pull off a professional-looking cake for my child's birthday parties. I was not disappointed in the results. The first cake I made was the rocket ship, at my child's request, and it turned out REALLY cute! I wish I had used the Wilton recommended colors, and it would have been even better, but I was happy with the results nonetheless. I have seen other "cupcake cakes" that just looked awkward, but the design of this particular set is so ingenious that you don't really know it's a cupcake cake unless you look closely. The silicone cupcake molds are made in several different shapes, and they are made to fit together like a puzzle, depending on the cake you're wanting to make. The included instructions give you all the guidelines for making the cake and give the recommended Wilton colors for each piece too. The beauty of this set is that it makes 3 totally different cakes, so you can use it several times. If you're creative, you can easily figure out ways to arrange the molds to make different things as well--my dad and I are going to make a fire engine at some point. The only gripe I have about the set is that the liners are difficult to clean. I had always heard that silicone was super easy to clean, but these things are not. You have to really scrub them. They are dishwasher safe, but you have to get all the cake off first or the dishwasher won't clean them either. That is the only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars on this product. Still, I would totally recommend these! So fun, and easy to use!

I just made the train for my 2 year old's birthday. The directions were easy to follow and the result was fantastic. Kids and adults loved it. I used chocolate frosting for the entire train to make it a bit more authentic (not to mention it was easier and cheaper) and then outlined it and created detail with white icing (some tinted with food coloring) and a cake decorating tube with tip. Then used tiny M&Ms, pretzel rods, crumbled granola bars, oats, cheerios, and raisins to keep it a bit healthier while still creating a really great looking birthday cake. Can't wait till b-day #3 to make the truck or rocket!!!

I made the train for my son's birthday. The kids loved it! It was easy to make. The cupcakes slipped right out of the silicone liners. The directions were very clear and easy to read. I am looking forward to making more. I have 5 children so it is nice to know that from now on birthday cakes will only cost me the price of cake mix. I think I will look for a kit to make cakes for my daughters too.

The kids and I had a lot of fun making and decorating the train. The baking cups work perfectly except they are a pain to clean.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Puzzle Cakes!, January 6, 2009
This review is from: Wilton Puzzle Cake, Transportation Silicone Puzzle Set (Kitchen)
Wonderful, reuseable, creative :-)
Total pain to wash the silicon cups, but you can put them in the dishwasher - just have some kind of wire rack or container to keep them in while in the dishwasher - I have lost a few cups that fell to the bottom of the dishwasher and got burnt by the heat coil.
I have so far made the turtle, the teddy bear, the fish, the rocket, a turkey for Thanksgiving, a Christmas tree and candy cane with square gifts, a truck/van, the train ... have plans for the flower if I can find a surface large enough to put it on (my largest cake carrier is 13"x9", not 22"x18")

5.0 out of 5 stars So Easy To Use, December 7, 2011

This set is very easy to use. The rocket was pretty long (needed a really long baking sheet) and needed to modify a bit - but my 2 year old loved it! Will try the train for Christmas!

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple and great, October 27, 2011

If a bit overpriced, for its simplicity, this "cake" pan was definitely a hit. Basically, its just a bunch of differently shaped Cupcake cups. You form them into the shape you want, and then pour batter in and bake. The cake rises and in most cases joins together to form a mostly even cake top.

The neat thing about it is the modular setup allows for a high reusability. We made a rocket ship for my 3 year old, and are going to make a train for my 2 year old. Next year who knows... a truck, a dinosaur, a recreation of the two towers of Minas Tirith and Barad-Ur? Perhaps.

So, its a little over priced, but that is offset by the fact that you can re-use it over and over again, which saves you on buying other shaped tins for followup birthdays.

...you decide to take the cupcakes out of the silicone holders and plunk them in a bowl of water right away.

The instructions and box cover show the silicone cups remaining as part of the finished product, which seemed weird to me, but since I could not quite get everything to fit onto the large tray I was using, I decided to try it without and just spread frosting over the sides of the cake/cupcakes as well. A little tricky, but the result was definitely passable for 3 and 4 year olds. Whew. I don't have a steady cake-decorating hand whatsoever, so I bet many creative and steadier-handed people could do more than my passable version - and not have hard-to-clean cups at the end.
