Wimzie, bless her, wasn't spared the typical 5-year-old's tortured instincts by her delightfully inventive creators, but that's what makes her PBS series--and this tape by extension--a blast of fresh air.
Happy Holidays culls two 25-minute
Wimzie episodes. In "Wimzie's Perfect Christmas," the wholly uninhibited fuchsia-haired dynamo and her daycare pals pull together to brighten the spirits of hospital-bound kids after coming full circle on the concept that presents are the best part of Christmas. And "We Want Toys" is a familiar tale of angst in which Wimzie convinces herself that because her parents won't budge despite her heartfelt pleas for a Binga-Boinga, the latest TV-advertised toy to die for, they don't love her. This episode, a gem for its genuineness, is reason enough on its own for choosy kid-vid buyers to pick up a copy of this tape. The compassionate way in which Wimzie's bruised feelings are bandaged--her dad's decision to bag the fireman's football picnic, his favorite annual event, in favor of a long-planned father-daughter fishing trip proves her parents' unwavering devotion--is apt to come in awfully handy when similar heartaches hit home. The "Perfect Christmas" episode racks up its own share of charms, but mostly it presents a neat and timely excuse to share this values-steeped yet light-as-air tape with kids 2 and older.
