In addition to the recipes, inspirational weight-loss tomes, and advice from weight-loss experts including Dean Ornish, M.D., and the folks at the Canyon Ranch and Rancho La Puerta spas, Ragone provides helpful charts--including "What's Your Weight Loss Personality?" "Calorie-Saving Swaps Away from Home," and "Low-Fat? Look Again"--as well as useful (although not brand-new) tips, like eat every two to four hours, swap fruit for fat in baked goods, and beware of oil "sponges" like eggplant. While intended as a cookbook rather than a diet program, the book concludes with "Two Weeks to a Slimmer You," a 14-day diet plan consisting of five "meals" per day at the 1,500-, 2,000- and 2,500-calorie levels. Although the plan does not offer choices or vegetarian options, there is plenty of variety, and portions are substantial enough to keep most people satisfied until the next meal. --Bree Altman

Fantastic addition to my kitchen.,

This review is from: The Win the Fat War Cookbook (Hardcover)
This cookbook has simple, low-fat recipes that are real winners. From breakfast to fast dinners to weekend treats, I love every recipe I've tried. My favorites include the spinach squares (think easy, healthy quiche), pita pizzas, and banana chocolate chip bread. My husband and my toddler enjoy these meals, which are easy to prepare. I can usually find a recipe I have ingredients for in my cupboard and it's great for last minute meals. I use substitutions in many of the recipes, and they still turn out great. Plus there is material about losing weight and eating healthy - from counting calories, to watching portion sizes. Basic, common-sense suggestions for keeping off those extra pounds. There's a meal guide in the back if you are using it for dieting purposes specifically, and each recipe includes caloric and nutritional information. I also like that there are images of most meals so I can cook a meal that interests my appetite.
