5.0 out of 5 stars Win The Game -- Excellent with a few caveats, December 18, 2007
By
Panama Mike (SF Bay Area, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Win The Game (Audio CD)
In short, buy this CD.

Paola & Chiara (P-C for short now, formerly P&C, originally PeC) have produced several excellent CDs, such as Television, Festival, and Blu, primarily in Italian and Spanish, with a few songs in English, a language they didn't sound comfortable in. Not any more. The sisters have been working on their English, and their desire to reach the American Market. And this CD has tracks that should be playing on American Radio, on Dance stations, Adult Hit Stations, even Easy Listening. Yes, they cover a broad range and do it very, very well.

This CD should be placed in the rotation of any self-respecting dance club DJ. A number of tracks are perfect for intense dancing.

And if you do not know Italian, that is never a problem with P&C. You will enjoy their voices.

There are two complaints I have with this CD, which I'll get to in the song reviews, but I hope they address them so they can improve their chances in the US.

Since a number of songs are related, or are the same song in a different language, I'll group them. And due to limits here, I'll skip some tracks that were okay, but not as noteworthy.

Win The Game (Intro) / (Outro)
Appear to bracket a version of the CD without the bonus tracks, appear to theme the album to be like a video game. Interesting.

Vanity & Pride
Dance song, what gives it a boost is that when songs wind down, it's usually fairly close to the end, but this one keeps the energy of the finale going on. One of the best.

Rumors
Dance, yet includes familiar P&C touches (the strings at the end are to die for), but with a story in it. Sounds like someone who's life is being hurt by rumors, and the victim striking back. There is an unfortunate lyric that is likely to preclude this track going on air, which is sad, as it's a song that could easily go up the charts, crossing over to both dance and Adult hits stations. It is hoped they will change the lyric and release a version for US consumption.

Secret
Not the hard driving dance tune of other tracks, but a more relaxed song, one that can also play on the adult hit stations. Mix of light techno and P&C signature sound. Very good, excellent voices.

Cambiare Pagina / Cambiar De Pagina (Turn The Page)
The Italian and Spanish versions are the same music tracks, a sad and pained ballad that they can deliver so well, where not knowing the language is not a problem. Listen in either language, and feel the emotion. Just beautiful.

I'll Be Over You (Turn the page)
The English version, on the other hand, shows how a song depends on the music tracks to set the mood. This English version is a dance club number overextended with instrumentals to a numbing 8 plus minutes. This should have been the English version of Cambiare Pagina, making a Rosetta Stone of emotion. Instead, it's a track to be skipped.

99%
Stunning, a song about making it past a crisis. It's given great power by the inclusion in the background of an operating respirator.

Tu Sei Il Futuro / Back To The Future
Italian and English versions with the same music tracks. A dance club track but infused with the P&C style of recent albums, rapid beat with measured lyrics. Very enjoyable.

Overall, an excellent introduction into the music of Paola & Chiara. If this is your first P&C album, you'll be buying the others. They are talented and a delight to listen to, in Italian, Spanish, and English.

Buy It. Ora! (Now!)

End thoughts: The sisters go for the english market crossover attempt. What happens in the process, they bring in more upbeat tracks & except for 1 or 2 tracks stick to that. Well I'm thrilled to see they mastered the english language (previous attempts on earlier albums were quite bad) they've done away with the mid tempo I love them for) Don't get me wrong, as you can see in my scoring the album works, but they literally flipped the disc to the DJ's. hmmmm. I'd probably like every song on this album better in Italian, as the trax they have in Italian on this album "Cambiare Pagina" & "Tu Sei il Fututo" are 10x better than the english counterparts "Turn the Page" & "Back to the Future". Very Madonnaish in sound, which is not like them at all!...Still love ya P&C!
