Metal Gear Solid and Goldeneye 007 fans take note: you need this game. Sure, main character Jean-Luc Cougar has a silly name, but his covert moves and daunting assignment rival that of a better-known, suit-wearing spy. Winback: Covert Operations is one of those games--you know, the hyper-engrossing, atmospheric type that suck you in until the graveyard shifters' lunch breaks.

As S.C.A.T. (Strategic Covert Actions Team) members, players must disable a rash of terrorists who've taken over a powerful laser satellite defense system capable of leveling large regions with one burst. Jean-Luc stealthily plunges into the control center, buried deep in a mountainside, lined with bad guys. This isn't a first-person shooter; the over-the-shoulder view provides plenty of screen space to plan each sneaky move, going for surprise attacks rather than all-out, bullets-flying action.

Once the player learns the somewhat complex, though natural and intuitive controls, manipulating Jean-Luc becomes an unconscious act. The fluid combination of The Matrix-style moves is entirely impressive: nothing like slinking silently against a wall, somersaulting into the open, picking off a terrorist, and then rolling into a crouch behind a crate. Just beautiful. --Eric Twelker

Pros:

  • Excellent player controls, though difficult to master
  • Nice animation
  • Well-paced storyline
Cons:
  • Simple weapons
  • Camera often errant, getting stuck behind walls or at bad angles at the worst possible times
  • Game saves only after reaching checkpoints, resulting in frequent restarts

I just recently ordered this game. Now I have no life because I keep wanting to play this awesome game! The graphics are excellent. The gameplay is outstanding. It's in my top five games for the N64. Right up there with GoldenEye.

If you're a fan of Metal Gear Solid, Syphon Filter, GoldenEye 007, or Mission Impossible you'll love this game. This game has an excellent multiplayer, an even better story with one of the best plots ever and is plain out fun. If you buy one shooter this year by WinBack.

5.0 out of 5 stars A few bugs but definatly worth it. November 29, 1999

Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I played this game for 3 days straight and couldn't get enough. It was kinda quirky at first and getting used to the controls (especially the camera controls) takes some getting used to, but if your looking for a good action game that isn't tomb raider(tm) then try this. Someone out there finally used the N64 for something good. It has a nice little story combined with a new way to control a character. It is a really good game if you ever wanted to step in the shoes of a covert ops character and sneak around and take out the bad guys one at a time. No huge guns that can kill a small army with one hit just one guy with his very small arsenal of weapons. You can even get a bonus for only using your pistol. I would definatle pick this up for those people that love thier Bond movies and had fun with Metal Gear Solid(tm).

5.0 out of 5 stars Watch out Goldeneye, you've got a good rival. February 13, 2000

Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This game is the best spy game in a long time. In Goldeneye, the enemies just stand there and shoot at you hoping to hit you. Not in Winback. The Terrorists will wait for you to show your head and then blow you away. And, Goldeneye's dudes will shoot at you if they see you or not. Winback's will wait until they see you. Winback: Covert Operations offers an exellent training program to teach you all you need to know how to do in the game. The "Crying Lyons"(the terrorists) show some artificial intellegence. Winback's multiplayer mode isn't as great, but offers more ways to challenge one another. Overall, if you were to buy Winback or Goldeneye, go for Winback. Goldeneye is horrible compared to Winback.

3.0 out of 5 stars READ MY REVIEW IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH ABOUT WINBACK! October 16, 2000
By Nathan
This game is o.k. Take my word for it, that's all it is, o.k.! Well I didn't want to give it a two or three, because it does have goodpoints, but it's not nearly good enough to get a four or five, those ratings are there for games like Goldeneye! I rented the game yesterday, and I got frustrated, because first of all, you have to have a "controller pack", (I always called them memery packs), but anyway, that's what screws you, because once you turn the game off, you have to start alllllllllllll over again, which sucks, believe me! Second of all, ... the camera views will definetly screw you, and I use that word loosely, because when your in a bad position, like in front of a bad guy, the camera won't give you the angle you want, no sirre, it gives you a behind the trees view, giving you a better chance at getting shot. And the third thing, which might be worse for some people, theres not much you do but go around shooting people, which is cool, but it gets old, and it gets old fast! I wish it had objectives like in goldeneye. But if your looking for a game that will be awesome at first, and then screw you, get this game. Ok, so maybe I am too hard on this game, if you've got the time to master the controls, and get used to the camera view, ok, get winback, but if your looking for a cool first person shooter, get goldeneye! It's the best game yet! Believe me, I'm a 14 year old critic/gamer, just like you, and I read these reviews just like you, so go back and look at what I have said, because I'm sitting here typing this review so you wont throw your money out, like I would have if I had bought this game, before renting it. Thanks for reading my review, I hope it helps you in making the right decision!

4.0 out of 5 stars Winback is good for anyone who liked Goldeneye. November 2, 1999

Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 3.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Winback is a mix of startegy and pure insane shot 'em up action. Although the difficulty level is pretty steep I must say that this game is great. It has very innovative control. It is very easy to die so you have to be careful and avoid stupid mistakes. I recommend this game to anyone who liked the shooter aspect of Goleneye or the planning aspect of Mission Impossible. Winback is a great game.

5.0 out of 5 stars WinBack: You can't live without it! November 8, 1999

Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This game is great, and hardly nobody knows about it. Koei has not given this game any hipe so not many people know about it! All the people that do have this game will know what I mean when I say its one of the best shooters since Goldeneye! Its the closest game to Metal Gear Solid for the N64. Its not a first person shooter, you can see yuor self on screen at all times. The controls are tough to learn, it will take you about a half an hour to learn but once you do its great. There is a-lot to do in the game that will keep you coming back and the bosses will give you a run for your money. The multiplayer is not as good as Goldeneye but it is good enough. There are a-lot of players you can be in multiplayer. Koei's WinBack: 11 out of 10

4.0 out of 5 stars Brings back memories..
Its so hard to rate a N64 game when you are a 360 or modern gamer, but i think this game is so underrated. It may be the very first 3D duck and cover game. Love this game.
